Omaha: We Don't Coast

Post by iamjacobm »

Saw this painted on the sidewalk in Benson last night and thought it was just a clever spray painting. Turns out it is a new slogan for the metro area by the Chamber of Commerce. I love it. http://www.wedontcoast.com/

I am guessing its a play double play on words.

1. The obvious - We don't have a coast
2. As far as a city and chamber - We down't take our foot off the gas or get complacent. We are always striving to improve.

All that said, one on my skyline photos will be used in a special way on a locally produced produce to help kick off this new drive. I can't say what yet, but its going to be really cool (at least to me) when it gets released!

I've never been a fan of these types of slogans anyway, although I guess since every entity insists on using them they're useful for some aspects. As far as they go, I guess it's a pretty decent slogan. Nothing that can be used to "make fun" of us, and a heck of a lot better than "Nebraska Nice" anyway.

Although on a personal level, all that "we don't coast" does is annoy me that we don't have a real roller coaster! :D

Guess it depends on perspective. I have to recruit off the coasts. It is very difficult to get people here. Something like this would seem offensive, but oddly might work.

It could be interpreted by east and west coasters to mean..."nothing to do here but work"
He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

I guess all the hints were part of the actual slogan?

Channel 6 reported tonight that $6,000,000 will be spent over the next 5 years to promote "We Don't Coast".

I just don't know what to say, but for a lot less than 6 Mil I'm sure I can come up with something.

I don't think a city should define itself by what it doesn't do; besides, it just begs the question------the motto lends itself to hilarious rejoinders like the ones above. Who comes up with this stuff?

It's kind of growing on me. However, it could be taken to mean we're not as sophisticated as the coastal areas. I mean many people on the coasts already believe we're not as sophisticated and to have "we don't coast" as a slogan may solidify it.

Who cares what the people on the coasts think of Omaha.. its not like their own chosen places to live are that great either.

Because I'm guessing part of the reason behind the slogan is to attract people and companies from the coasts.

I'm guessing that no part of the $6,000,000 ad campaign will be featured on drink coasters.

I have friends and coworkers who've visited both coasts and there are people who think we drive tractors and horses to work. I mean they could just be elitist pricks but still.

This is the first year its been square. Before its always been more of a traditional Magazine Size.

This is also the third year that the OWH has published it for the Chamber. Previous to that they Chamber always published it themselves.

Here is this year, and then one from a couple years ago, then one from several years ago in the frame.

Last year had the SR Open on it. the Swim trials were also on one a few years ago.

Sorry about the glare, this is just a cell phone shot sitting on my desk.
