No Walnuts for the Squirrels

Post by U R my Helix »

Not exactly breaking news but ... Has anyone else noticed that there are no walnuts for the squirrels this year at some parks? Each fall my nephew and I collect a few buckets of walnuts at Walnut Grove park and dole them out over the winter. They are normally everywhere, but this year there are virtually none to be found. I thought perhaps they had mowed and picked them up but several people confirmed that the walnut trees just didn't produce this year.

I have plenty of walnuts in my yard this year. The most I have seen in quite a few years.

Had two 5-gallon buckets this year from our walnut tree. None last year. I think it depends on when the last freeze is in the spring and what stage the tree was in developing the walnuts at that time. The location of freezes can vary quite a bit locally too. I also read that they typically only produce good quantities of nuts 2 out of 5 years.

I have been working on a photography project for a client for the past 3 days out at 132 and L. They have one tree on their property with a ton of nuts under it.

Huh ... strange that a location that close would be so different and that Walnut Grove at 150th & Q would be barren especially given the number of trees at that location. I foresee a migration of furry little animals from the park this winter.

Heck, I would do it now if the Squirrels would cooperate!
