Nebraska Businesses that have left Nebraska

Post by Brad »

Trying to think of a list of Nebraska Businesses that start here but then moved their HQ somewhere else.

Northern Natural Gas (Enron) - Houston
Baker's (Kroger) - Cincinnati
ConAgra - Chicago
PepperJax - Denver

Possible Cabela's - Springfield

Does Hayneedle count? They are still here, but owned by a company in New Jersey.

Although now defunct, Pamida was another one.

Not totally sure Hayneedle counts if they are a subsidiary. Berkshire Hathaway owns a number of companies outright that operate out of HQs all over the place.

So, is Northern Natural Gas at One Pacific Place the same that merged with Enron? I know it's a Berkshire company but did not know if it's the same company that got involved with Ken Lay.

If I remember correctly when Enron went belly up some Omaha investors bought some of the assets in the wake and recreated the company.

Might be just semantics. Northern Natural Gas (InterNorth) purchased Houston Natural Gas. Then Ken Lay was made Chairman and led a coup where the HNG members of the board gained control of the board and moved the HQ to Houston and the Enron name followed. I don't recall it being termed a merger here in Omaha at least. Maybe the media in Houston saw it differently.

Quite over-simplified I know. Hopefully my memory is somewhat accurate though.
My son got a 27 on his ACT. No this score is not as high as what Jeff's son achieved. But one has to remember the paternal gene-pool my son has to overcome. On a PGPAB [Paternal Gene-Pool Adjusted Basis], my son's score is a 37 and Jeff's son's PGPAB ACT score is 19.

I was aware that Northern Natural bought HNG. I always wondered how Lay got such a tight grip on the company as to move the HQ to Houston.

Add Level 3 Communications and Northwestern Bell to the list. Both moved to Denver.

Smeal is based in Snyder, Nebraska, and has plants there and in Neligh, Nebraska; Delavan, Wisconsin; and Ephrata, Pennsylvania. Spartan has about 1,800 employees at 13 facilities.
