The Elite Eight things to do in Omaha

OWH wrote: "As a new visitor to Omaha, you're probably a bit in shock right now.

You expected guys in overalls tossing kernels of sweet corn at you as you departed your plane, a steak restaurant on every corner and lots of people wearing red. We apologize.

You're too early for sweet corn. Some of our most famous steakhouses are gone. And the football team was downright rotten last season, making us more blue than red.

So, other than the basketball the few days, here is an Elite Eight list of things to experience and remember about your stay in Omaha:

8. Malls. If you're looking to spend, you're in luck. The Omaha-Council Bluffs area boasts six major shopping malls....."

Because shopping malls are unique to Omaha...

The thought of visitors stepping into Crossroads or Malls of the Bluffs and thinking of them as 2 of our six MAJOR shopping centers makes me cringe.

5. Water???

4. Boystown?

Ok, how about a better top eight:

8. Strategic Air and Space Museum(yes it's a bit of a drive but endlessly more entertaining than Boystown)
7. Casinos(let's be honest)
6. Parks: Gene Leahy Mall, Heartland Park, Lewis & Clark Landing Food
5. Food: Restaurant instituitions(La Casa, Lo Sole Mio, French Cafe, Dundee Dell, pick your steakhouse)
4. Slowdown
3. Museums: Joslyn, Durham
2. Old Market

I tweeked your list a bit:

8 Things to do in Omaha should include:
1.  Visit Our World Class Zoo!
2.  Visit Our World Class Josylan Art Museum!
3.  Visit Our World Class SAC Museum!
4.  Visit Our World Class Local Restaurants!
5.  Visit our Historic Old Market
6.  Visit our Unique Slowdown and Filmstreams
7.  Tour the Hot Shops and other local galleries.
8.  Visit all the other national stuff we have (Dave and Busters, Casinos, etc)

Notice I included some of theirs but I worded it MUCH different!

It's sarcastic humor folks... or at least a bad attempt at it.

Unfortunately, Omaha doesn't have enough 'elite' events like these... to be squandering the PR opportunity on articles like this.

Boo Omaha World Herald.

Yeah sarcasm lost on every outsider(and most Omahans) who read the article and has their stereotype reinforced.

With the abundance of such articles perhaps this thread could just become a new forum...

Yes?  Boystown is one of the "elite eight" things to do in Omaha??

Its a place with a national reputation that does great things but that doesn't make it entertaining.

oh, and that was supposed to be :Crying Laughing: but that emoticon isn't working...

Did anyone get a chance to lurk on any of the Omaha-bound teams' message boards?

Let's just say, besides KU and KSU, NOBODY was even remotely excited about coming to Omaha.  In fact, there were people specifically not going or are choosing to stay in Kansas City instead and driving.

A few quotes I found:

Kent State:

"I am sorry but Kent State got the total shaft here! UNLV is not an easy draw in round 1 and then to put them in Omaha, Omaha! The worst city/site in America, in the field! Who the heck wants to travel to Omaha, Nebraska.. To put them in Omaha and face Kansas in the 2nd round. Nebraska and Kansas U own that area. That is a total hose job if I ever saw one to put them in that site. If anyone was contemplating whether they were going to fly out and make the trip, they just said forget about it. Tampa, Denver, Releigh, DC, all better sites for fans and better for Kent State."

"Who the **** wants to go to Omaha!?!? Do they even have an arena large enough to be hosting a tournament?"

"After watching American Idol there is no way I am going to that podunk dump."

UNLV:

"Omaha chicks....this should be interesting."

"Does Omaha have an airport? Or do I need to fly to Kansas City?"

"I have driven through Nebraska and Omaha once.  It was at night, but in a nutshell, it was small, dirty, and it STUNK."

USC:

"Seriously, why do they play these games podunk cities?"

"ROFL.  Have fun going there, I hear they pimp their tractors out!"

Wisconsin:

"Things to do/see, restaurants, etc in Omaha?" :
-"NOTHING, absolutely NOTHING.  Go watch the game and get the heck out of there, that town absolutely sucks and the NCAA must of been on crack to have a regional there - WOW?"

I would say this is why you would like those people to ACTUALLY COME to Omaha --- not have them rely on photos and american idol.

What do you expect from the Local Monopoly Fishwrap?  This is the same outfit that for a year wouldn't call it the Qwest Center...for their own childish reasons they called it the Omaha Convention Center and Arena.  And forbad their own employees, including the sports staff from using Qwest Center.  And then, over a year later they finally relented after the rest of the planet saw how idiotic the LMF (local monopoly fishwrap) looked.

Then there was the fanatical reaction to a legal vote on casino gambling.  I can only think that one of the higher ups lost at the blackjack table and had a problem getting a refund on his losses.  Or maybe it was at the penny slots.

Yep, I have a problem with the LMF.  I haven't subscribed in a long time.  My problem goes way back.  Their reaction to the Franklin case was cruel and spoke volumes about both the charges and the executives at the company.  Even if the charges were false, and that's a stretch, the LMF reaction was horribly cruel.

As always, those are just my opinions and I could be wrong....

There is only one comment on the article but it is a UNLV fan ripping the writer for being an idiot.  Hopefully anyone who reads this |expletive| also reads the comment.  I have seen a lot of articles like this and it does boil down to whether the writer is an |expletive| and whether or not he feels, for whatever reason, like ripping the place.  470 freeway?

I guess my question is, where the heck are the people ripping on Little Rock?  What's with this outcry of complaining about Omaha?  Did Little Rock somehow pass us by in terms of excitement and cultural vibrancy without anyone noticing?  Or is Omaha's national image much worse than any of us could have imagined?

After reading that article, that guy was definitely being a d@@k towards Omaha. Remember that this guy is a writer for the Las Vegas Sun, of course Omaha isn't going to be as exciting as Vegas, that's not what we are all about here anyway. I have heard many of my colleagues that travel into Omaha from cities like Chicago, Dallas, Kansas City and Denver that love coming to Omaha. I knew someone was going to hammer Omaha on the 1am bar closing time... that's another issue for another day, but if Omaha is going to be a big player on the National Scene, we at least need to have bars in Omaha proper stay open to at least 2am, this is one of the few larger cities I know of that cuts off at 1am, I could definitely see that fact frustrate someone from a lively city like Las Vegas. Everyone else I ran into this weekend from out-of-town for the tourney seemed to be enjoying themselves here.

I am starting to change my mind - I think this is a bigger issue than we both realize.  It was no big deal to me but I think we need to address it.  The problem is we have voters that are 3/4 stupid and I doubt it will ever change.  If the people were too closed minded to see that we already have casinos but none of the benefit - why would they see the logic in a 2AM closing?

Getting a little off topic here, but would a later closing time NEED to be voted on by the public?  Or could it simply be passed by the mayor and/or City Council?

I believe that bar closing time is state law. Any efforts to change it would need to be through the legislature I'm guessing. If anyone else knows for sure let us know.

God, that is ridiculous.

That seems like a misappropriation of authority if I've ever seen one.  Because I'm sure someplace like Ord has the same economic and social considerations as Omaha.  I'm just picturing some corner bar in tiny-town Nebraska ACTUALLY staying open until 3am if there was a statewide change.  What the EFF.  Leave it to local governments.

Could someone please post the email addresses of our state Legislators like they did for the city councilmen?

We should email our Legislators and tell them how we favor a later last call time, or at least allowing it up to the city governments to choose their last call time. Referencing these articles would likely help our case.

Did you even read the article?

It compares the Omaha debt for the Qwest, ballpark, etc to taking out a second mortgage for an improvement rather than all being the equivalent of credit card debt.  All in all there is a positive spin put on what is in the photo, if that is possible.

The article seems fair and speaks to the truth.  What do you propose they use as a photo?  My take is that this is a fair use of the photo a balanced story.

I did read it, my problem with it is this:
Photo of stadium is captioned in large letters "Omaha's mountain of Debt".

Sure some people did, but I bet those that dod thought that already without this photo.  Fact is I think this article is accurate and does not condemn the stadium.  The truth is that this does add to the debt and in some ways it was discretionary spending.  Don't take that wrong, I think it is good spending but it WAS optional.
