Still $1.79 over on the CB side - for now that is!

First time I remember a jump like this on Sunday.

Most of the stations in CB were $1.86 yesterday....there are a few near S 24th st that are cheaper, but most are $1.86 and will probably be $1.98 tomorrow. They always seem to lag a day or two to price increases.

I was out and about some on Sat afternoon. Many of the stations went up during that time on Saturday.

I was in the hospital with my wife having our baby for the past 2 days and it was $1.99 at most stations, I leave today to get gas and notice it is $2.12. Only .13 but it is the psychological aspect of crossing the $2 plateau.

Congrats again on your second Baby!

I'm guessing the gas companies saw the news and thought, another mini van on the road, time to hike up the prices. :;):

Yes, crude futures are trending upward, $47 and change according to the Talking Heads a few minutes ago.

You will notice, of course, that when crude futures go up, the retailers are Johnny On The Spot about jacking up the prices. When crude futures tank, however, they take their sweet time about it!

It really does not bother me so much when crude and other commodities move in the same direction as the major stock indices. I get concerned when, like in 2008, the DJIA went far south and commodities headed straight north. What really annoys me, however, is when crude futures are flat and nationwide retail fuel prices are flat and the Omaha average jumps up. It's not that uncommon!

Looks like most stations in Omaha are $2.09, while it has been $1.99 at the stations off of 24th St in CB for the past few weeks.

Gas prices down in Omaha area, statewide
Jay Withrow / World-Herald staff writer wrote:The decrease comes courtesy of a glut of oil and refined products, said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst for GasBuddy.com, a gasoline website.

“As air temperatures across the country rise to sweltering levels, gas prices have continued to cool,” DeHaan said. “Not only are gas prices nationally at their lowest level of the summer, they have continued to decline.’’

Yes, crude futures broke the slump a few days ago and the local dealers were Johnny-on-the-spot to follow! We've been seeing prices higher than the nationwide average for the last couple of days. :(

That's where I usually fill up. That cluster of stations has almost always been the lowest in the entire area for several months now.

Just saw quite the difference in prices on 72nd St.

Both the BP and Shell station just north of I-80 were only $1.87.

Gas in Ralston was $2.05. Gas in Papillion was $2.09.

Crude futures did kind of a roller-coaster dip on the 10th., and (fortunately) some stations responded.

Along north 72nd today....$1.95 in the morning.... then $2.12 right after lunch. At Quick Trip 72nd & Ames and PH66 72nd & Maple. SuperSaver was still $1.89 at 72nd & Blondo.

A lot of fluctuation lately.

I don't mind fluctuation around the $2.00 mark. Just a couple years ago it solid at $3.99. Is $2.12 the highest we've seen this year?

If you look at the local price chart (http://www.omahagasprices.com/Retail_Price_Chart.aspx) it's been a roller-coaster for the past two weeks or so. Crude futures have been trending north and the retailers around here react quickly when the futures price pops.

The frequent gas price fluctuations over the past couple weeks are complete silliness IMO..

Honestly, is there a TRUE reason you'd pay $1.97 for gas one day, then wake up the next morning and see the price move to $2.12 a gallon.. Then back and forth and back and forth again?...

It's total BS..but again, that's my take..

And I know- it's always been that way.. Still BS though :;): ...

Completely agree. As we have noted on here before, it is ridiculous how quickly gas prices react to rises in crude oil, but when crude oil crashes, it takes days and weeks before we see a large change at the pump. Usually they lower it a few cents per day, but as evidence from yesterday it went up .17 in one day.

Not defending the way gas is priced, but you have to look at it this way: As far as the station is concerned, the price you pay while you fill your tank is the replacement cost + profit + taxes for the station at THAT particular moment in time. It doesn't matter how long the gas has been in their storage tank or what they paid for it.

But I agree there is way too much lag time when the price falls, and not enough on the way up, it seems.

It would be nice if customers could buy a contract for 1000 gallons, locked-in a set price, and keep it in the stations tank, and then pump & pay as needed. Wishful thinking, but I think the City of Omaha does something like that for Public Works vehicles.

Yes, airlines, municipalities, and other large users commonly have a contracted price for a set amount of gallons. This helps to keep costs more constant as a sudden spike in prices like consumers see could be hard to deal with. Of course, there are times when fuel prices go down and then the contracted price doesn't look so good.

Slow price declines can be explained in part due to inventory. A station may see cheaper prices from the wholesaler, but they have fuel on hand at the old price which still needs to be turned over.

There probably is some profit taking by the station as well. It really isn't a big deal as long as competition is adequate. The station likely was realizing razor thin margins when prices were going north.

Get the logic but it seems to only work in one direction. If that is the logic it should be slow going down and slow going up

Was in KC this past weekend. I've been going there every few months for about 40 years. This is perhaps the very first time in all of those years that gas prices in KC were more than a dime per gallon higher than they were in Omaha.

I was in Kansas City for an extended weekend about a month ago (the weekend where it was tres muggy!) and I remember the prices were lower there than in Omaha. Looking at the "heat map" today (http://www.omahagasprices.com/Price_By_County.aspx) there's a definite hot spot in Kansas City proper for some reason, with Kansas City showing a shade hotter than Omaha, even with our recent price jump. I have not seen this before either. St. Joseph is still cheaper.
