Ambulatory schizophrenics are usually more likely to be victims of violence. When they are violent, they frequently act in this manner. He apparently had been off his meds for a few months when this happened. Very sad for him and his family. Future is pretty grim.Brad wrote:That was crazy, and the shop was busy when it happened. How about the 15 and 17 yr old that robbed the Sonic on 90th & Maple last night. Police caught them a couple of blocks away and they had a gun. Poor North 90th Street has had a tough time of it already it don't need this.

Got to see this crazy care chase first hand. Was walking home from Walgreen's and about a dozen cop cars blazed by me on Davenport. Now they bailed literally on my other friends block and he is texting me that there are about 30 cops with AR rifles outside his home.

Things got pretty crazy last night on the east end of town. People got shot downtown and a lady showed up at the hospital with a tiger bite she got while trespassing at the zoo.

It is truly sad when these events occur, the lack of comments when they do happen speaks volumes. Not only have we gotten used to the violence now it has become taboo to comment on it as well.
I don't know how these shootings can be stopped and it certainly is not the fault of the apartment community where it occurred. These apartments are not that old by most standards, they are nice, and are intended for low income family's.
One wonders though that given the frequency of occurrences in that area if there could not have been a police presence nearby. The problem is that even when the police arrest someone they just get let go to do things again and the cycle continues.
Since July within the boundary's of this community the following have been reported:

I guess you could put a beat unit in the area, but the residents also need to be proactive and call 911 to report suspicious activity. If criminal activity is that rampant in a high density apartment complex, the likelihood is high that people are seeing some of this stuff going on,

Re: Crime in Omaha
3 shootings at 3 apartment communities within the past week. Part of the problem is that the property owners have lost their rights to enforce rules within the community.
Aside fro a threat of a discrimination law suites; we can thank the VAWA (violence against women act) it makes it illegal to evict or non renew someone "just because" the police were called once, twice, three time or 100 times due to domestic violence occurring on the property. So now the drug dealing boyfriend baby daddies can move in (the landlord will not be able to PROVE they live there, they are always "just visiting" in court or overnight guests). Should the "victim" wish to vacate, the landlord must let them go and they can not charge the person for moving out in the middle of the night even though they are on lease. If the person happens to have a housing voucher, housing will just reissue the voucher to the new landlord. The now former landlord can not disclose the prior events to the new landlord either. Even if they did, the new landlord can not factor all the prior disturbances into the decision of renting to the "victim" as it would be illegal under the new laws.
Is it any wonder that these problems spread from property to property?

When someone provides housing in a rental property they should not be labeled slumlords. So you consider each property owner where the shootings occurred slumlords? And as for section 8 vouchers they do serve a purpose and are active in every city and state in the nation. The problem is that the PROPERTY OWNERS rights are being stripped away and they are forced by law to put up with problems as a daily part of life, the courts wont back them up. Your perception of renters and property owners does not help much either.iamjacobm wrote:Then the landlord shouldn't accept Section 8 vouchers.

The tenant provisions of the Violence Against Women Act only apply to those in "covered housing programs." If a landlord doesn't want that act getting in the way of them evicting tenants, then they shouldn't rent to tenants who receive federal housing subsidies.vvindows10 wrote: When someone provides housing in a rental property they should not be labeled slumlords. So a landlord can choose not to rent to section 8 renters? They can do so without legal repercussions?
Re: Crime in Omaha
From what I can find, there's no penalty on the Federal level for simply refusing to rent to a section 8 tenant. Some places have income discrimination ordinances/laws, which would prohibit a landlord from refusing to rent because of Section 8 income.bigredmed wrote:So a landlord can choose not to rent to section 8 renters? You may be able to use the hassle of dealing with HUD inspectors as a non-tenant reason for refusing to deal with Section 8, but who knows if something like that would hold up in court if the prospective tenant would choose to sue.

Except that they don't have to choose to sue. I wanted to write to let others know. I live out in Elkhorn, in an area by 192nd and Maple - Elkhorn View Estates, and on Saturday night we were robbed. We were asleep in our beds. They accessed the garage by garage code and got into the house. Luckily they must have found that we were home and left before too much was taken. I am grateful no one was injured and nothing was damaged.
I wanted to put this out there so others know, please lock your cars, even when in the garage, and remember to lock the door from the house to the garage (usually we did this, but forgot to do it that night). Also be aware of what is going on in your neighborhood. If you see something weird, ask or say something. Get to know your neighbors, or at the very least say hello to them when you see them - know what they look like.

If something going on in the neighborhood seems suspicious, try to get a description of the activity and any vehicles/suspects, and call 911. The operator will prioritize the call, so you aren't wasting resources by having the police investigate activity that doesn't seem right.

Re: Crime in Omaha
Our garage was broken to a few weeks ago as well. They took an ipad out of my wife's car and a $10 pair of sunglasses. They left all my tools on the shelf right in front of her car, and they left everything else in the garage. The last time we checked, they still had not turned on the ipad yet.
We have SEI Secure our house and they did not come in to the house, but we didn't have anything on the garage doors. However now we have tilt sensors on both garage doors. Soon as anyone opens the garage door, my wife and I both get a text message and if they don't press the password in 45 seconds the alarm will sound and SEI will call. It will also text both of us if the door is left open longer than 20 min.

Taking the time to get photographs and record serial numbers for valuables is helpful too. That way the police have a picture and can log the serials in the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database. If the thieves try to pawn the stolen items, or they are recovered later, the police can trace the items back to you.

Police/SWAT Standoff going on at a house in the Keystone area. Multiple agencies, including Omaha, Douglas County, and Nebraska State Patrol are there. The Omaha Police Bomb Squad recently arrived. Not too many details other than the suspect may have lots of guns and has a history of manufacturing fireworks.
