This is especially sad for me. Between 1979 and 1982, I worked for an education foundation in D.C..(the job that brought me here). Around 1980, I met a new hire who was not long out of college; very bright, soft spoken, calm, reserved, and friendly. I noticed that people were especially drawn to her; she had a quiet charisma and made you feel immediately at ease. She was only with the organization for a year, and I was sad to see her go. I didn't know her very well, but had an opportunity to work with her on a couple of short projects----long enough to discover that this type "B" personality and I shared an off-the-wall dry wit.

20 years later, I flipped on the PBS news hour and I remember saying to no one in particular: "Hey, that's Gwen!"

So long, Gwen----you left us to soon.

By no means would I say its "untimely"... his clock has been ticking since he stepped down 8 years ago at least.

How many people who rightly cheered Pinochet's demise will either be silent or offer only tempered criticisms of Castro?

Greg Lake (69) of Emerson Lake and Palmer. Hearing "I Believe in Father Christmas" will be especially sad this year. ELP was the first rock concert I ever went to, and still one of the best shows I have ever seen.
