"Daytime" population shifts

Post by Candleshoe »

Just for fun census study...

I noticed that City-Data has a line item on it's city stat pages that references the daytime population net gains/losses due to work commuters.

I'm using the 2014 pop estimates for the rankers of "official estimates" first, and then using the net gain/loss for daytime populations.

2014 Population estimates
1 Omaha 446,599
2 Lincoln 272,996
3 Bellevue 53,936
4 Grand Island 51,236
5 Kearney 32,469
6 Fremont 26,500
7 Hastings 24,915
8 Norfolk 24,444
9 North Platte 24,327
10 Papillion 23,270
11 Columbus 22,630
12 LaVista 17,686
13 Scottsbluff 14,875
14 S Sioux City 13,360
15 Beatrice 12,055

Daytime Population estimates
1 Omaha 530,338
2 Lincoln 291,146
3 Grand Island 57,683

La Vista loosing 1000 during the day is way off. They easily have 1000 people a day coming in to work at Pay Pal alone. They got enough big employers to bring in 5000 people a day and then some.

You don't think that most La Vista residents work in the city and live in the suburbs?

I would bet that a significant number of these work in the "city" as it is traditionally defined (the urban core). I am surprised at the number of people who live in Elkhorn or LaVista who in their daily lives, have no reason to go east of 132nd or north of Center Street. So from that 1000, some fraction live in LaVista and work at the base, or work in other areas in Sarpy Co, or work in Millard/Ralston/West Omaha.
