Kiplinger: 10 Great Cities for New College Grads

Post by Coyote »

10 Great Cities for New College Grads
No. 10 - Washington, D.C.
No. 9 - Charlotte, N.C.
No. 8 - Seattle, WA
No. 7 - San Francisco, CA
No. 6 - Philadelphia, PA
No. 5 - Omaha, NE
No. 4 - New York, NY
No. 3 - Colorado Springs, CO
No. 2 - Boston, MA
No. 1 - Baltimore, MD

No. 5 - Omaha, NE
Median monthly rent: $711 (nat. average, $817)
Median income (2009): $27,075 (nat. average, $30,402)
Income growth (2005 to 2009): 3.5%
Unemployment rate: 5.1% (nat. average, 9.2%)
Percentage of residents ages 20-24: 6.9% (nat. average, 7.0%)

No. 5 for grads - Omaha, NE
Omaha's metro area population comes in at 829,702. Five Fortune 500 Companies -- Berkshire Hathaway (BRK-A), Union Pacific (UNP), Mutual of Omaha, ConAgra Foods (CAG) and Peter Kiewit Sons -- call Omaha home, and the city offers thousands of high-paying, high-skilled jobs in finance, defense and information technology. Starting salaries go further in the Midwest: Omaha's rock-bottom rents put a two-bedroom apartment within easy reach of most recent grads, and the cost-of-living falls way below that of the other cities on our list. Omaha also offers a surprising mix of culture and nightlife, especially in the trendy Old Market arts district and the dozens of jazz, rock and indie-rock clubs downtown.

Pros: Low unemployment rate, low crime rate, short commutes
Cons: Limited public transit system, low median income overall

Find me 24 to represent multiple dozens.

Go.

If we're talking genre specific, name me even 4 or 5... Music at bars downtown is usually decided upon which drunkie has the most quarters in their pocket.

I'll even be generous on what we call both downtown and nightclubs and try to put a list together of places to see live music regularly:

Sokol
Slowdown
Orpheum
Holland
Qwest
Myth
Your Mom's (the old Downtown Blues, although not much longer I'm told)
Dubliner
Side Door
The Max, if you count Lady Gaga showing up
Lewis & Clark Landing
Anchor Inn

LOL....  I'm hoping I'm completely out of the loop, because if that's the loop, that article is nuts.

To add to E's list I'll include Downtown/Midtown

Oleavers
Brothers
Bones (which isn't Bones anymore but has been sold and will be reopened soon and have music)
Joe Bananas
Civic
Music Hall
Blazing Pianos
Midtown Crossing (summer jazz series)

Stiles (SP?) under Wheatfields has had live music both times I've gone. But it's pretty new so I'm not sure how consistent that is.

Whiskey Roadhouse and Stir are just as close as MTC if you want to add those.

Downtown Blues
TD Ameritrade
Whiskey Tango
Bar 415
Sullivans Bar(if you want to count an open mic night)

Double entry.  Is now Your Mom's Place.

Might as well count Jazz for live music once a week then, too.

This is seriously stretching it...  What do we have here?  Maybe 5 legit places?

My bad.

The Matt will have live music during the CWS.

A lot of places that have live music from time to time, but not near as impressive as the "dozens" indicates.

Well hey, didn't you know? Just stay at the Sheraton Crown Pointe and you can be just next door to all these attractions!

Not going to complain about being on that list though, whether or not the numbers are a bit massaged and generous.

But seriously, the music scene is mostly in Benson, not Downtown.

and Barley Street

Not bad.

Any list that has Baltimore as number one should automatically lose its credibility.  One of the most dangerous cities in America being the best city for new college grads?  I don't think so.  All of the other choices seem to make a lot of sense though.  Omaha seems like the odd man out, though.

I can't argue with the fact that there is a cray-cray amount of gang violence in Baltimore.  But Baltimore's crime, much like Omaha's, is heavily concentrated in two areas, neither of which will you ever find yourself in accidentally.

South Baltimore and all areas around the harbor are fantastic.
