Hello all. Long time no talk. If you're a numbers geek like me, the U.S. Census metro estimates come out "unofficially" on Tuesday, 03/24 and officially on Thursday 03/26. Omaha checked in at 895,000 metro and 932,000 CSA last year. It'll be interesting where we end up wirh this latest estimate. Based on current growth, it's looking like 905,000 metro and 942,000 CSA..

Place your best guess here..

The one thing that show should add is a giant "You are an A-hole" button that the contestant outbid by a dollar could push and add a random number to the second bid. Then if the first contestant wins, they have to give one of their prizes to the A-hole as a consolation. Sort of "Here is a case of taco shells, thanks for being an A-hole."

If we grow at the exact same number as last estimate it will be 904,678. The growth rate from 2010 to 2013 was 3.44% if we grow at the same rate of change from 2010 to 2013 than we should see ~905,100 this year.

Missed in the Russian Attack:
Omaha is now 904,421
I guess we all were a little too optimistic.
2023 is now the target for 1 million.

So when we hit the 1million mark will that be the CSA or MSA? And I'm also curious how close the commuter patterns are between Lincoln and Omaha to reach the threshold to combine them. Years ago I was told we were just 8% shy.

Douglas Country went next about -300. The growth is all the suburban counties.

They have been growing faster than us for quite a while now. State capitols seem to be doing really well in our region, but they have just as much going for them job wise as we do with less crime and less traffic in a more progressive state.

Well I'm not rain man but by rough eyeball calculations by the time we hit 1 million DSM should be about 750,000. And by then we better damn well have lincoln combined with Omaha (1.4 million).

Where did you get -300? It says 2013-537k and 2014-543k.

My bad I was going off memory there and forgot the details. We were -300 domestic migration. International migration and births were the drivers of growth in Douglas.

Here is a chart showing the city population estimates from 7/1/14:

Looks like Omaha did very well, better than any other city except for Sioux Falls.

Image7-1-14 Populations by Scott Stronck, on Flickr

Edit: Added a few more Iowa cities, but Omaha still looks very nice compared to other large cities. Currently, based on the new numbers, Omaha is ranked 41st, recently passing Colorado Springs. Less than 5,000 to go to pass Virginia Beach for 40th.

At this pace, Omaha would pass the 1/2 million mark by 2020.

How can Alston grow so fast being land locked?

I think that growth happened around 2011, when all the growth around the Ralston Arena happened. The Oaks apts were built on the former golf course and they have 276 units. So if there are 2.5 people per unit, that alone is around an additional nearly 700 people.

It looks like if the trend continues Omaha proper will have a higher population than Kansas City proper. :)

Given these data points "we" are growing a touch over 15%, 17.7% if you negate Council Bluffs.

So the entire metro grew by 39K and the city grew by 37,641?? I have a really hard time believing that the entire rest of the metro only added 2000 in that time.

I believe these are only counting populations within the official city boundaries. Omaha would have lather annexation packages and growth from within.. But proportionately the smaller municipalities grew faster, at least according to these stats.

It's interesting, over the years, as you hear people complain about Omaha taxes/etc... you often hear the response, "That's it, I'm moving to Council Bluffs!". Yet, it consistently flounders behind the rest of the metro in growth.

Ralston is a bit of a shocker... is this a result of the apartments (or is this assisted care?) near the arena?

And I believe Papillion entered the top 10.

Apartments. My cousin lives in there. They're not bad, but they are laid out in the most nonsensical way possible.

I know one family with 3 kids who specifically moved to Council Bluffs from Omaha to avoid taxes..

Other than that, I have many friends that were born/raised in CB.. And all of them, with no exceptions, live on the Nebraska side of the Omaha metro.. With most living within Omaha's city limits..

I also have always found this interesting..

I grew up in CB and out of all the people I know who lived there, over 1/2 have moved to the Nebraska side of the river as well.

Ya. I lived in Omaha for ten years and then I moved back to CB. Omaha was sterile . Enjoy it more over here. Now the midtown areas are getting cool but suburban not so! I love the mixed demographics where I am at. I have 600,000 homes, 200,000 homes , 350,000 homes and mine . Old and new. It is an interesting area. And the topography is so cool. It was boring in west Omaha.
