OK stat geeks, can you answer this question...?

According to the most recent stats... Where is the population center of Omaha?
NEX is advertising it is closer to .??? Than 'the Mall'....

If we consider 'Omaha', by pop, by zip, by geo....
Where exactly would this be?

I would say just north of 72 & Dodge

Are we talking Omaha proper or the metro area? If Omaha proper I agree with daveoma. If metro, I'd say around 72nd & Pacific.

I was thinking population center, not geographic.

I looked at the Platte River North, Elkhorn River East (Included Waterloo), Bennington South and all of Council Bluffs West. Based on ZIP Code population I put it about 90th and Pacific around Happy Hollow. This did not account for anyone living on base at Offutt.

I was curious about this since I made that map the other day. So I decided to have a go at it. The census corrects for longitudinal convergence in their calculations of the national center of population. I didn't because I figured it doesn't have significant enough of an effect on the scale of the Omaha Metro.

Wow, that is a lot further east than I thought.

Here's what I did. It's further east than I expected as well. Let me know if you find anything wrong. If anyone knows the specific tracts that make up Omaha the city I would be happy to add that.

I was wondering how far East it would be. Thanks for putting that together.
It would be interesting to see where this center would be per decade - as Omaha annexes SID's, and now as Downtown builds more housing units.

I was able to find http://www2.census.gov/geo/maps/dc10map ... BLK2MS.txt which seems to list all Census Blocks in the City of Omaha.

Unfortunately the centers of population info only goes down to the Block Group. So unless there's a mapping of Block to Block Group that I can parse I can't figure out how to do just the city. Anyone know of such a resource?

Although I call Westroads the "center of town" now, I've thought of One Pacific Place officially being the current "smack dab center" of Omaha. So, wasn't too far off!

I live about 5 blocks east of OPP, and consider my home to be in the center of the city.
Ironically, when I was a kid our back yard marked the western city limit line.
