I agree with the above except the origins of the martini include vermouth.  Most bars no longer include it.

You should use vermouth to rinse out the glass before you make the drink.  There should be no vermouth in the glass when the drink is made.

When I first started bartending, my Grandpa told me how to make a Martini.  Take a glass and fill it with Gin or Vodka.  Take the cap off the vermouth, smell the vermouth, put the cap back on and drink the vodka and for 10 years now, I have never used even a drop of vermouth in any drink I have made in any restaurant or bar that I have worked in!

I used to do that, but it always seemed to pool at the bottom of the glass and then the end of your martini was olive juice and vermouth.  Ack.

Hemingway (I think, maybe it was Churchill... English people all look the same to me) used to tell people to just glance at the vermouth from across the room.
