The truth about Omaha and Nebraska taxes

Post by Erik »

Nebraska ranks #22 for overall tax burden, still .9% LESS than the average burden the average us citizen faces (includes the #9 state tax rank):
The Tax Foundation - Nebraska's State and Local Tax Burden, 1970-2007: http://www.taxfoundation.org/taxdata/show/466.html

Omaha is .4% above the average for tax burden for large cities, now remember Omahan's rank #36 in total income out of 366 metro's with a remarkable 12th lowest cost of living..

Figures on this can (and do) say pretty much what anyone wants them to say.  The old saying...figures lie, and liars figure, is very true.

That said, hearing that Omaha and Nebraska rank about in the middle sounds about right.  Just as our services rank about in the middle.  You get what you pay for.  That concept should not be rocket science.

Ran across this Nebraska state government report today:

Final Report of the Nebraska Tax Policy Reform Commission, November 15, 2007
http://www.nlc.state.ne.us/epubs/L3790/B068-2007.pdf

It's about 200 pages long, but if anyone is looking for a highly-data-driven analysis of taxation in Nebraska, this is likely about as good as it gets.

Table of contents:  Summary of Commission findings and recommendations -- Demographic and geographic information -- The overall Nebraska tax system -- The Nebraska property tax -- The Nebraska sales tax -- The Nebraska corporate income tax -- The Nebraska individual income tax -- Nebraska state tax administration

Texas..

Post by Erik »

So I was talking to people who moved to texas from Nebraska, and they began to brag about not having to pay taxes on their vehicle or state income..

but come to find out they pay between 3.3 to 4% for their property taxes in the big cities.. I can only imagine how much higher it is in the country...
