Further evidence of the continued consolidation of the region's population into a handful of cities, while everyone else either loses population, or "grows" at less than the national average.

Des Moines is kicking a$$.

Other regional cities (mind you , these are city pops, not metro pops):

Rank    City          7-1-2007   4-1-2000

39.    Kansas City, MO..450,375 441,545
51.    Wichita...............361,420 344,284
52.    St. Louis.............350,759 348,189
110.  Des Moines.........196,998 198,682

Note that while metro DSM is growing like a sunbelt city, the city of Des Moines continues to lose population.  All the more proof that city populations are pretty much irrelevant.   It's the metro that matters.

That's awesome, Des Moines has all the good things going for it, and I forsee this city being the next regional big city along with KC and Minneapolis..
Go Des Moines!!  Good for Omaha as it will have another destination city nearby!  :music:

...that, or are you being just really sarcastic, Erik?  I mean, i live in Iowa, but when people ask where I'm from, i just tell them "right near Omaha" and they go, "oooh ok."  I give Des Moines kudos, because they have made progress and do offer a decent amount, but seriously they aren't going to be the next big urban center, at least not over Omaha.  And i don't mean to take anything from them...just that there's far too much going on here for people to say "oh yeah Omaha's good and has a lot to offer, but let's pass it up because over there is Des Moines"

I know that all sounds just like I'm bashing DSM, but in reality it's not that i'm anti-Des Moines, i'm just pro-Omaha.

I love reading about the Omaha metro area and seeing iowa statistics.  Hasn't anyone over there started their own forum yet?    :lol

(and before you get your panties in a bunch - i'm just joking around.   I have nothing against DSM.)
