Post by Omaha Cowboy »

Just in from the US Census Bureau!!:

Omaha:
2008 MSA population- 837,925 (2007-827,666) up 10,259..

Lincoln:
2008 MSA population- 295,486 (2007-291,248) up 4238..
No CSA for Lincoln..

Omaha-Lincoln combined 2008: 1,169,283..

Other cities of interest-

Des Moines, IA:

2008 CSA population- 625,384..

Wichita, KS:
2008 MSA population- 603,716
2008 CSA population- 637,781..

Oklahoma City, OK:
2008 MSA population- 1,206,142
2008 CSA population- 1,275,758..

Tulsa, OK:

Dallas, TX:
2008 MSA population- 6,300,006 ( )
2008 CSA population- 6,665,261 ( )..

This is healthy growth for the Omaha Metro..

Just in case someone is wondering what 'MSA' and 'CSA' stands for, here is a quick fingertip reference:

The CSA stands for Consolidated Statistical Area..A county is added into an MSA (Metroplitan Statistical Area) if 25% of it's county residents commute into the primary county of the MSA..In Omaha's case that, of course, would be Douglas County..The additonal county added into Omaha's 8 county MSA to make it our 9 county CSA is Dodge County..Home to the city of Fremont..

That's not bad. A couple of 12,000+ growth years would be good.

Since we're already comparing other metros, thought I'd take it a step further and include the Nebraska Micropolitan Statistical Areas as well...

Omaha-Council Bluffs, NE-IA METRO

I think there is a VERY good chance the CSA number will register at 900,000 (or slightly larger) once the official 2010 census numbers are tallied..

These annual estimates given by the US Census Bureau are notorious for being low ball in nature..

Am I missing something here?  837K people in the Omaha metro, but more than 337K live outside Douglas County?
Stable genius.

That's all fine and good but Dallas isn't a "peer" city or remotely close to here. It's stats should be as listed as much as Miami.

i was looking at the excel file with the new listings and i noticed that the first couple years in the 2000's they only estimated omaha barely growing at all?? from 2000-2001 it says we only gained 100 something people.. then the next year we only gained a little less than 2000 people.. now these numbers seem ridiculously low for the growth that i know was happening here in omaha at the time?? i guess omaha gets no respect :/

Yes and I pretty much agree with you..

Not to worry though. The Census Bureau fiddles with these estimate numbers quite frequently and they're famous for low-balling the numbers..

Once the official 2010 count tally comes in, I expect Omaha numbers to gain anywhere from 7,000 to up to 20,000 over the latest estimate..

I just noted that KC went over 2 million in their CSA.  I am sure a lot of champagne corks went flying over that news down there.
