Then we're alll safe until the Tornado of 2038. At least by that time midtown will be near Waterloo.

So, I'm packing for the big move and wondering if I can safely put away all winter clothing. We arrive April 28. What do you think?

Keep a few sweaters handy and maybe a pair of gloves. It has snowed on my birthday here in Omaha (May 23rd).
In fact in 1977 when I turned 16 and tested for a drivers license it snowed some big fat wet flakes.
That was probably the shortest driving test given that year. 3 blocks and she made me turn around. Your done, you pass! 8)

The last time I remember it snowing after about mid march was 1992. So it happens, but rarely. I've never experienced snow in May though.

There appears to be 2 utilities companies to choose from. Does anyone have any advice, or are they equal?

2?

1) Omaha Public Power District - Provides electricity

2) Metropolitan Utility District - Provides gas, water, and sewage services

You need both, unless you're talking about something else.

Not sure if this particular nugget is covered, but you might want to check out the Chamber of Commerce's Newcomer guide:

http://www.omahachamber.org/live/Newcomer.aspx

Of course, it's only a static page, whereas we're cool and dynamic and stuff

Just checking data from Omaha NWS since 2000- we've had at least trace amounts in April on April 7, 2000; April 2, 2002; April 4, 2003 (0.2 inches); April 6, 2003 (2.2 inches); April 7, 2003 (2.3 inches); April 8, 2003 (0.2 inches).

In reading the Chamber newcomer section I had to laugh..

I've always called 'pop' a soda and I've lived in Omaha pretty much all of my life..

Oh well..

I used to call it pop until I was 12 and forced myself to call it soda but now everyone I know is calling it soda too so its natural now.

If you are from the Midwest:

"Where can I get a pop at?"

If you are from anywhere else:

"Do you sell soda?"

"Pepsi or Coke."
"Ummm, just a Pepsi."

To be fair Big E (or equally unfair, depending on your point of view) people slaughter the English language just as often out here (i.e. ending sentances with prepositions, which you so inaccurately think is a midwest thing :P )...not that it even matters, languages are never completely static, they grow and change and what was once considered inappropriate (like this incredibly long sentance, for example) become accepted.

But you know...it still annoys me too. :)

Ha, they have a map for everything. Great find.

But seriously, it's funny how much this thread has turned into a general discussion on vocabulary.

Nice Titos..

Looks like 50-80% of us in Douglas and Sarpy counties refer to soft drinks as 'pop'..I guess I've fallen into that 'soda' minority :) ..But true enough..My family/friends down in Texas refer to soft drinks as 'coke'..

So are Seattle, Portland, and Minneapolis.

I switched to saying soda a few years ago, but recently (and purposely) I switched back. Our saying pop is sort of like us having an accent, so I play it up as much as possible.

You guys crack me up. Actually, this site was one of the factors that swayed my decision to move to Omaha. None of the other cities I was looking at had a site like this, filled w/friendly people who love their city. I thought it was really cool, and I tell people about it all the time. Only 2 more weeks til I'm there...SO excited.
Oh, I say "soda".

I can see this thread turning into a horrible eomaha civil war.

Or at least descending into gang war fare. The "Sodas" v. the "Pops".

Soda water or Perrier anyone? I stopped drinking sodas years ago and so I either drink soda water, club soda, sparkling water, seltzer water, carbonated water, Perrier, or Mendota Springs (doties)...
