 That is pretty funny and somehow seems likely. I wish someone could come in and get a big amusement park going in the metro.

AWESOME.

Looks like the financing may be coming along :sarcasm:

"For example, in Omaha, Neb., he has been waiting for nearly four years for state legislators to approve a law that would allow tax increment financing to be used in counties for development of projects such as his. Recently, something similar to TIF was approved, named the enhanced employment district, but it should work just as well, he said."

It's really sad that the Wheeling media hasn't caught on to this idiot (Minard).  I wouldn't be surprised if he has some kind of mental illness.

Amusement Park

Post by Guest »

I remember hearing a couple years ago about a possible large-scale amusement park on the riverfront... did anyone else hear this?  This would be huge for downtown development because it would be a destination for a lot of tourists/downtown inhabitants.  Also, the only thing I remember thinking when I heard this was "where would there be enough land for this type of project on the river?"  Can anyone confirm this rumor?

Guest,

You must be thinking about Steve Minard (president of Metro Omaha Theme Park LLC) who first proposed a $70 million Wild Escape park for Council Bluffs but couldn't secure financing. He then proposed an amusement park to be built near the Mahoney State Park interchange along Interstate 80. He then backed out of that project also a few years back. Which created a forum buzz word "to be Minarded".

Last night I Sokol-ed my oldest daughter and refused to negotiate about what we were having for dinner.  I was then Minarded by Mrs Tuna who fell asleep on the couch instead.

what about placing it in the space between Cuming and Webster and 15th and 21st? I think that would be a neat space for something like that. imagine a Ferris wheel in our skyline, or a roller coaster swinging around the stadium during the world series...

I think Creighton owns most of that and is planning on building on it after modern equipment is moved.

Also, I am not sure there is enough room there.  I think most amusement parks have parking lots that big.

Minarded.  One of the best words to ever come from the forum.

It's so clever, i want to minard myself into using it in as many sentences as possible.

Maybe not so far off. Think bigger, and more north. There's lots of empty land north of the new ballpark.

I would love to have an amusement park of any scale DT. I think north of the stadium up towards Carter Lake would be perfect.

No doubt.  Something positioned downtown like Elitch Gardens in Denver would be awesome.

I know this would cost a chunk to move tracks, clean up land etc, but think this is the ideal area for an amusement park, in the red area shown below. The blue area would be more hotels and etc.

Something like that would be amazing. Not only for development of north downtown, but I'm sure, along with some current projects, something bordering 16th street like that would be such a huge jumpstart for a 16th street revival.

Tons of businesses.
A couple empty warehouses. Some railroad bits. A cement Factory. And a Junkyard. It's east North Omaha, it's not like you'd be bulldozing strip malls.
Plus, I think Chubb Foods is in the red there, which is reason enough to have at it.

Taking a closer look, the below area could be made using the existing track on the west with a new alignment on the north side.

A few things to note.

A. Look how much of the land is already bare.
B. This land is very flat, so once the buildings were cleared out, you'd have little grading costs.
C. Proximity to downtown, the airport, hotels, etc.

Yes I realize it would be costly and is unlikely at best, but it makes sense in some ways.

Yeah, and even if they did build a theme park there, it wouldn't be the first to straddle two state lines. Paramount's Carowinds in Charlotte straddles North and South Carolina.

Who needs a roller coaster or dodge-em cars when we have all these potholes to keep us entertained.  And no entry fee is required.

An amusement park downtown would attract just as much trash as a casino.  Might as well level north downtown and take a big |expletive| on it.

well I was referring more to the litering of convenience stores/gas stations and fast food, thus destroying any aesthetic integrity.

There have been two semi-serious proposals.

1. A few of the big gaming companies (Boyd, etc.) were proposing a North Downtown casino in the vicinity of Qwest Center, but it was voted down, opposed by strange bedfellows such as Ernie, Ozzie, and Warren.

2. One of the tribes did have some land just across the Iowa line just north of North Downtown and planned a casino, but some TLA put the kabosh on it a couple years ago.
