Climate Change

Postby S33 » Fri Sep 27, 2013 2:37 pm

Who needs a modern radar at all?

There was a competition recently which included many meteorologists from many states, as well as meteorological hobbyists and other random participants. In this competition, they were to track and predict the weather as accurately as possible, and all would receive a cumulative score based upon accuracy of their forecasts.

The results were varied, minus one individual. The winner was not a weather man, weather expert, or forecaster in any field, he was a hobbyist who could not afford all the latest computers and gadgets and modern software models to predict the weather, however, what he used was a computer setup from late 70's/early 80's, monochrome monitor and all, and he used the forecast models from that era alone, to predict what astonishing accuracy - at least in comparison to the other participants.

It wasn't even close, he won the competition by a landslide. Turns out, they could pinpoint the difference of that model from the more modern models in that it did not include all the new-age "global warming" or "climate change" metrics, which allowed him to forecast with such accuracy.

Anyway, that got wayyy off subject, just found it interesting and this reminded me of it.

Global warming is such a funny subject. I love how each side only chooses to tell you certain things about it to preach their specific agenda. Anyway, Burlington Station...

I can only imagine what would be proposed if there was an Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at at the end of the ice age.

I did my biggest research paper in college on climate change and picking apart An Inconvenient Truth.  There are definitely inaccuracies and sensationalism in that movie, but for the most part it is accurate.  The real crazies are the ones stating global warming is a hoax, luckily they are the fringe and make up a minuscule part of the science community.

Well, the data doesn't lie; if all indicators and data show the planet is heating up, it's probably heating up.

But let's all be honest with ourselves, the Earth has compiled over 4.5 billion years of data, and humans have only been able to capture, accurately and globally, 30 years of it. That would be like pretending to master the laws of physics as a newborn learning to walk. The truth is, we don't have the faintest clue as to why the Earth has warmed recently, and there isn't a shred of credible data unequivocally linking it to greehouse gasses. Additionally, we also do not have the faintest clue as to why global warming has seemed to halt in recent years, even regress toward normal.

What we do know, is that climates are cyclical, and have incredible extremes. In fact, go to any farmers field north of I-80 in Iowa. You will find random boulders piled in corners of fields by the farmers, and these boulders were bedrock from far north pushed all the way into Iowa from a glacier as little as 15 thousand years ago.

Having said all that, Cap and Trade IS a scam. It's as big of a scam as Crystal Pepsi, Bottled Water, and Little Orphorn Annie's decoder pin.

Haha S33 thats pretty close to what I've been arguing with people have been just a little too vocal about their beliefs on global warming. My first question is usually so if global warming is going to destroy our planet how do you account for the ice ages and 4.5 billion years that its somehow survived intake up to this point?

Our real dilemma is how to act upon the data which we've compiled. Because we really don't know one way or the other...

I think the concept of needing to act on something regardless if its even possible to accomplish much of anything is exactly the reason why our country has made countless bad decisions over the last 50 years.. When you have emotional social issues that are met with groups of people screaming that something must be done even though there really isn't much positive to be gained is what keeps us heading into bad decisions as well.

Just look at the Morbro 4000 and the subsequent launch of the modern consumer recycling movement. Recycling has its benefits with some items if there's a market, the raw material costs are high and/or it takes significantly more energy to produce new products. However, a lot of what we do now at home in terms of recycling is overkill and probably just makes us feel good.

I have long known that recycling ends up costing more in the long run since there is so much more that has to be done to it and another hugely annoying thing is the I'm better than you are because I recycle or.. What do you mean you don't recycle you don't care about the earth? etc.. I'm so sick of other people using these social issues only to earn a way to criticize their friends for not being as good of a person as they are.. 8)

You mean like Republicans (mostly members of the Tea-Party movement) over the past five years who think costs should be reduced no matter the cost to GDP and the people? (just look at what they are doing right now - the government shutdown, the debt ceiling...)

What you mention sounds more like modern day Republicans than Democrats. I am VERY anti-partisan, but cannot stand behind plain stupidity. If 97% of scientists think global warming is man-made, what evidence do you have to counter that? I for one argued for years that what we've seen over the years is just a normal cycle. But I can no longer do that because science has triumphed what now appears to be false ideology. The fact that John McCain said that the goal of their party is to attack Democrats just proves my point of how partisan politics affects what should be rational thought.

It is not "them vs us" - it's we're all in this together.

As for "In this competition, they were to track and predict the weather as accurately as possible, and all would receive a cumulative score based upon accuracy of their forecasts." - I just today solved a problem that all the senior members of my team could not solve (people who have had more than 15 years of experience). And guess what? It was all by luck. So why do you think this 'meteorologist' is so much better based on one result? Based on today, I should be the lead member of my team and nobody should listen to what they say anymore. But we all know that is ridiculous. Or at least I sincerely hope so...

If you must know I don't like the Republican Party at all either and if I had to classify myself it would be as a Constitutional Conservative meaning that I would rather see smaller Government all together and a strict adherence to the Constitution. The John McCains of the world are only concerned with the fact that they are politicians and couldn't care less about their constituents.. so when it comes down to it these are the exact example of the kind of politicians that should have been voted out of power years and years ago but have somehow kept their power by slandering anyone who opposes them and winning by default. I also believe that there isn't an easy solution to this and blanket saying that they stand for defunding the Government and then end up voting to not defund it makes you wonder why they even mention that they stand for defunding anything when they vote to pass it anyways. If I had my way I would eliminate all but the absolute essential areas of the government because no American citizen needs the NSA, EPA, DOE.. etc. They do nothing but waste tons of money and intrude on all levels of American life.

Hopefully this makes sense.. I'm a little sleepy for political talks haha

"Government Shutdown" is a ploy that is regularly exercised by the minority party during each presidency, to various degrees, whether is denying funding for some key elements of government, or an all-out offensive against an annual budget.

And I'll preface the following comment by saying that I am neither a liberal nor conservative, heck, I don't know what I am, as all the crazy mother fuc*ers in this country insist on picking a team. But, I do know that there is absolutely ZERO difference between a staunch liberal or conservative. So let's not pretend there is.

There's no doubt global warming is a thing, I think that people are misled intentionally for various reasons; usually for monetary or political gain. It's a natural, cyclical process that has occurred for for a long time.

In the end, if you're the kind of person who draws your opinion on global warming from politicians and businessmen, you are an idiot.

Capitalism is not an economic system or anything that could be construed as anything inherently scandalous, it's simply a policy of property ownership - just like it's counterparts in socialism and communism.

So, I'm not really sure what you are talking about. Give me some details, you may have a valid point.

How did a thread begin by talking about the repurposing of an old train station by a news station end up turning into a discussion on Global Warming and Capitalism?

Can't all of you folks respect a thread for what it is supposed to be about, and start your own thread to talk about something completely different?

quit your whining. How many discussions have you had in your lifetime which stay completely on topic? There's always segways into various off shoots of conversation, which is completely normal in human social interaction.  I just love watching certain members fake outrage over something completely innocuous such as the discussion above.
