Techies reject coasts for 'Silicon Prairie'

Saw this on CNN.com today

Midwestern tech is coming into its own. Jeff Slobotski produces an event called Big Omaha that includes more than 500 of the region's workers from Nebraska, Missouri, Kansas and Iowa. The annual event just took place in May.

"We've got a real healthy and growing community," said Slobotski, innovation director at the AIM Institute -- a nonprofit membership organization for IT leadership.

Recent jobs for developers, coders for backend structures, as well as traditional corporate IT jobs have been filled recently by workers from the coasts, he said.

Slobotski, who runs a blog called "Silicon Prairie News" http://www.siliconprairienews.com/ said high-tech talent and ideas are thriving in the region many coastal residents snidely refer to as "flyover country." Some of the newer companies in Nebraska include Agile Sports/ Hudl in Lincoln, and Hayneedle.com  http://www.hayneedle.com/ and Rockdex http://rockdex.com/ in Omaha.

Saw this on the National News today. Focus on Lincoln

"Silicon Prairie," America's new entrepreneurial frontier

What's happening, say Stephanie and Paul Jarrett, is an explosion of startup software companies in the heartland, reports CBS News correspondent Mark Strassmann.

"It's time we bang the drum and let people know there's something happening over here in Lincoln, Nebraska," said Stephanie Jarrett.

In 2012, they decided to launch Bulu Box - a monthly service providing samplers of premium health products. But first, they had to leave San Francisco.

A California startup company with some big names behind it announced Wednesday that it is moving to Lincoln.

Ink Labs, which makes a printing kiosk, moved into new temporary digs at Fuse Coworking in the Haymarket earlier this week. That will serve as the company's home base until permanent office space is ready.

Ink is the brainchild of Jonathan Manzi, its founder and CEO. Manzi, who has been called America's youngest millionaire after amassing $1 million in net worth a decade ago at age 16, started Ink while a student at Stanford University.
“Lincoln, Nebraska, affords Ink with the ability to attract smart, young, loyal talent at scale and offer them a superlative proposition for quality of life,” Manzi said in the news release.

The company has 25 employees but expects that number to increase quickly, Manzi said.
