Union Pacific's 150th anniversary celebration

July 1, 2012 will be Union Pacific's 150th anniversary.

U.P. memorabilia marks milestone

http://www.omaha.com/article/20111208/M ... -milestone
Erin Golden WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Railroad fans looking forward to Union Pacific's coming 150th anniversary celebration now can get an early start — if they're looking to buy special-edition memorabilia.

Think commemorative calendars, hats and shirts and snow globes that play a song from 1970s-era U.P. commercials.

July 1 will mark 150 years since Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railway Act, creating the railroad that now spans 23 states and 32,000 miles of track and employs more than 43,000 people. Activities marking the milestone are scheduled throughout 2012. They'll include more than 30 events for U.P. employees and celebrations in 26 communities across the railroad's network.

U.P. shares 150-year story

http://www.omaha.com/article/20120103/N ... year-story
Erin Golden WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:On July 1, Omaha-based U.P. will mark a major milestone: 150 years since Abraham Lincoln signed the Pacific Railroad Act, creating the Union Pacific Railroad. To celebrate the big event, the company is planning a yearlong slate of events, ranging from picnics and festivals in communities across its 23-state network to a contest that encourages entrants to come up with their own version of U.P.'s "Great Big Rolling Railroad" theme song.

The railroad has unveiled a special 150th anniversary website featuring information on the song contest and an interactive railroad history timeline. And there's something else that will likely be of interest to many rail fans: a place to share stories and photos about all things railroad-related.

In addition to visits from the railroad's historic steam locomotive and U.P. events at celebrations like El Reno, Okla.'s "Fried Onion Burger Day Festival" and Boone, Iowa's "Pufferbilly Days," the story-sharing is a way to reach out to people across the country, said U.P. spokesman Tom Lange.

"We are part of about 7,300 communities," he said. "And a lot of them grew up with Union Pacific, became towns or cities because they had access to the railroad."

U.P. museum will roll to rail fans

http://www.omaha.com/article/20120322/M ... -rail-fans
Omaha World-Herald wrote:Rail fans in cities across Union Pacific's 23-state network will soon have a chance to celebrate the railroad's 150th anniversary with a walk through a museum on rails. A 1960s-era baggage car called the Promontory has been transformed into a history exhibit, featuring historic railroad photos and artifacts from the building of the railroad. The car includes two touch-screen exhibits with information about the railroad's history and the communities across its system. The "Building America" exhibit is a scaled-down version of the 150th anniversary exhibit that will open at the Union Pacific Railroad Museum in Council Bluffs on May 12. In coming months, the car will travel along with U.P.'s steam engine and historic diesel engine to nearly 30 cities, beginning in North Little Rock, Ark., in early April.

Reminded, the UP 844 Steam Locomotive will be Arriving in Council Bluffs Tomorrow Afternoon!  There will be no Public Display on this Trip so you better catch it rolling in to town.

Tomorrow's path will follow,North Platte, Lexington, Kearney, Grand Island (noon), Columbus (1:30 pm), North Bend, Fremont, Arlington, Kennard, Blair, California Junction, Missouri Valley (3:30 pm), then south along the bluffs to Council Bluffs (4:00 pm).

I can't believe they were able to fix it that fast!

Heads Up tomorrow!

Not only is the 844 coming to town tomorrow, its also going to turn around on the Wimmer Wye!  Should happen about 5pm.

For those of you not familiar with the Wimmer Wye, its basically a triangle shaped layout where the train will come north from South Omaha and head west past 42nd Street out on to the mainline, then the train will travel in reverse through Omaha so when it gets to Council Bluffs, it will be facing the correct direction for the display.

Due to the way its facing, I would guess its going to go from north out of Council Bluffs on the old CNW to Crescent, Honey Creek, Missouri Valley, Kennard, Arlington, Kennerd and then to Fremont.

Their website shows it going out through elkhorn...

I think we are going to go to tahazoka park in elkhorn to see it, then probably catch it in Fremont while they service it.

I think that MAP on the UP Steam site is Old, Thats how they came to town too.  It wouldn't suprise me if a new map showed up tomorrow.

They can turn the train around, but not in Council Bluffs.  They go out near 42nd Street Just south of Interstate 80 to turn it around.  I am about 99.9999% positive the turntable in CB is too small.

How do they turn around there? Do they go just west of 42nd, go to the track that runs south of the mainline and go backwards until F St and then start going forwards again?

Thats Exactly right, Its called "The Wimmer Wye" named after former UP Engineering Presidnet, Bill Wimmer.

I have found out that they can take the tender off the 844 and turn the 844 on the old CNW Turntable over in North Council Bluffs.  If they did that, it would have been really cool to see!  I have never seen that happen in CB.
