42nd and Leavenworth Building Collapse

Post by iamjacobm »

Crazy scene right now.  Looks like a car crashed into an old brick building with an antique store in it.  The roof is sagging in and looks like it could fall any second.

Yeah has to be less than a year old.  I was just heading home and got redirected by about a dozen police cars and two fire trucks.  When we swung by by I noticed the roof completely crumbling and sagging in the middle.

Thats a shame if I remember correctly that was a beautiful old style building. Think they got ripped off hard on some antiques?

Haha I believe it was 4417 Leavenworth the house that has a 2 car garage leading out onto Leavenworth across from the Honda Repair shop? Doesn't sound like same house but I LOVED living in that area some day want to live near there again.

Were were down there for several hours last night watching.  Went back for about 20 min this morning.  Building has to be a total loss.

They pulled 2 bodies out just before noon.

That building is a total loss, in the pictures online about the story you can tell the roof and what was left of the wall along 42nd are sagging. Article said the building was severley compromised so I would bet they have to take it down or risk it and that billboard collapseing

The billboard had been successfully removed from the roof when I drove by earlier tonight.

The first few years of my life i lived not very far from there, 45th and Marcy or so, and my dad worked (still works) nearby, so I have probably been down Leavenworth a billion times or so.   I remember this being a Postal Uniform store when I was a kid...   Kind of sad to see it go.

Yes, the look is deceiving.
The foundation is gone - everything is neatly grazed to an even soil level.
You have to look closely to see it from this view.
There is a several foot drop from the building to the South (brick building on the far left) to street (Leavenworth) level.

Not only a foundation, but a full basement.  There was a day or two you could see it before they filled it in with dirt.

UNMC will be working with Morton Meadows Neighborhood Association to make this lot more aesthetically pleasing. A group of MMNA's members met with Omaha by Design and completed a "Place Game Workshop." Ideas currently floating around include a patriotic mural on the remaining commercial building, benches, a new Morton Meadows sign, retaining walls etc. Fundraising and final plans to be determined, but at least a few of these ideas will most likely be implemented.

That will be nice to dress up the corner and bring a little more green space to the area.

I'm surprised that UNMC didn't purchase the corner in order to add 20 more parking spaces.

Haha, yeah.

I can't wait until they do something with the old gas station on the other corner. It looks like such a dump.
