Why can't they do this in the afternoon? I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one who likes to sleep in on Saturdays after a long work week.

Hard to get volunteers to personally check all the sirens. The county staff are all on OT. Getting it done by noon saves money.

How about start at noon, end at 3, so HR can get some dam sleep? :)

Part of me has wanted to be a Heartland REACT volunteer. However, an old boss of mine went through the training and he said that most of those people were weird.

Off the record, many of us hams think your boss may be on to something. Get into ham radio. We connect into public service via our own groups. The test is $15 and basic high school science and some laws. Despite it not being too hard and not expensive, it seems to be a good filter.

Barely had enough volunteers and later we wouldn't have had that many. The paid staff are all on OT. Pay 1.5x wage for 4 hours instead of the whole day.

The sirens actually wake you up? I can sleep right through them.

My dog likes howling along with them.

The new sirens are designed to be loud enough to hear them outside. Inside your house, you are supposed to be alerted by NOAA weather radio or TV.

My weather radio wakes me up real fast. I bought it after I completely slept through the Millard Tornado with the windows open... That was before I had my CPAP machine and I think I sleep even harder now...

I know that sirens are only meant to be heard outside. I guess I've either always lived pretty close to one (not sure - I've never really paid attention to where they are) or I have really good hearing. Although I kind of doubt the latter.

As for weather alerting - I love the fact that smartphones have this built in now. Freaked me out the first time the EBS tone came on my phone though.

That was the event which triggered me to buy my radio.

Modern weather radios with SAME function are great. Once you set your county and the surrounding upstream counties, you can sleep through the various alerts for other counties, but get woke up for the ones that could affect you.
