The President is stopping by in Omaha. No details as to what he'll be doing here and when.

That's really cool that he chose Omaha to go to first.

Yeah it is. He didn't forget that Omaha voted for him.HR Paperstacks wrote:That's really cool that he chose Omaha to go to first.

I got a ticket today. Really amazing that the first year of Baxter Arena that the facility is hosting a sitting US president. Really proud to be a UNO alum given the amazing growth of the university and the affect this facility has had on the school and the community.

Unfortunately I have to work.
I have been following some of the comments on the media FB pages about his visit. I know there are some that don't like him but WOW did they come out enforce and put down anyone who shows an interest in going.

Re: Obama Visits Omaha
All the tickets for public to see President Obama in Omaha are gone
OWH staff reports wrote:No personal vehicles will be allowed near the arena. UNO will be providing shuttles from its Dodge and Pacific campuses from 11 a.m. until 2:45 p.m.
The arena sits about 8,000 people, and doors open at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The actual time for Obama to speak has yet to be released.

Sounds like Center St will be blocked also...
Re: Obama Visits Omaha
Yeah no traffic by the arena. Have to park at one of the campuses and get shuttled over.

Re: Obama Visits Omaha
Ridiculous that UNO is closed and they are blocking off Center Street. The Secret Service is out of control. I am all for keeping the President safe but the idea that we have to shutdown huge portions of a city to "Protect the President is ridiculous".
For the first 100 years of the White House there wasn't even a fence people use to be able to come have picnics on the front lawn. There is a balance between protected the President and the insane unquestionable Imperial Guard the Secret Service has become today.

Re: Obama Visits Omaha
To be fair, the kinds of devices and ways to kill assassinate a political leader have changed. The ability for a single person to wreak havoc has grown exponentially over the last 100 years. So, this is simply a bad argument.Joe_Sovereign wrote:Ridiculous that UNO is closed and they are blocking off Center Street. The Secret Service is out of control. Gotta keep things safe. In an era of high powered rifles, biological weapons, home made explosive devices, etc. it's a different world than days where people were having picnics on the front lawn of the White House. Apples to oranges discussion.
I have no issue with this. It's one day every decade or so a President visits. Either suck it up and accept the road closures or stay home. Complaining about it is just silly.
Re: Obama Visits Omaha
Heard on Sharp and Benning's podcast from yesterday that UNO is going to try to squeeze 12k in Baxter utilizing the secondary ice sheet as overflow/closed circuit viewing.
Has anyone else heard this? I can't find mention of it anywhere.
I have tickets, but I have no interest in sitting there all day to watch the president on a tv screen. If I can't get into the arena, I'll bail on this.
Any info?

It's not ridiculous at all and they are not out of control. Especially with all the hate and death threats directed towards this president.Joe_Sovereign wrote:Ridiculous that UNO is closed and they are blocking off Center Street. The Secret Service is out of control.
Re: Obama Visits Omaha
Also, Center is likely the only feasible way out of the area in an emergency situation. It's easier to have part of the street shut down already than try to close it down to get someone out of there in a hurry.

Re: Obama Visits Omaha
Not crazy at all.
In the 90's when Clinton was the standing Pres he was in Cedar Rapids IA and came to a dedication of a Czech Heritage Museum. The Museum was shouting distance from the production plant I worked at. The visit was on a Sat. but the plant ran 24 / 7. The motorcade ran right in front of the plant in addition to the close proximity to the event. The plant was asked (all but told) to shut down part of the operation for the period of the visit.
We did and the experience of meeting with the advanced security team was cool but eye opening all the same.

Our wonderfully idiotic, childish governor decided he'd rather perfect that speech of his then greet the president on Wednesday.

looks like the giant thumb changed his mind and will meet obama now.

I'm assuming this is why they had to rebook me on a later flight tomorrow morning. They didn't say why, only that the flight was changed.

Re: Obama Visits Omaha
From the story in the paper about presidential visits to Omaha, I really like this picture which was taken from 20th and Farnam with the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in the background. Wish that building in the foreground was still there. That land is now a parking lot and space for Wells Fargo Bank's drive thru lanes. What a waste.

I am surprised at how many cars are in the Baxter Parking lot right now. At least three dozen.

Are any local stations broadcasting the speech? I know 1110 is, but I don't really want to fire up the radio.

I think it is funny that they are using sand trucks to block the 67th St entrance, and having to move them every time a bus wants to go out.

7 years ago, I was walking downtown by the World-Herald building when the motorcade with then VP Dick Cheney came by. A police officer saw me walking towards the route, and I was ordered to stop in place by an officer until after it passed. I was almost a block away at that time. They take this security seriously.

Yeah sorry I got a new tablet and I am not sure how to post a facebook photo here from there. Usually I click on a photo and get the image address, but obviously it didn't copy the correct address.Coyote wrote:I'm not gettting that facebook photo.skinzfan23 wrote:Here is a picture of the people lining up. That is hilarious. I was there that day. The company should have allowed the workers to see the President but the Secret Service shouldn't have demanded the plant shut down.
