LINCOLN, Neb. – The second annual Midwest Healthy Indoor Environment Symposium: Radon, Energy and Indoor Air Quality will be March 7 in Omaha at the Holiday Inn Central, 72nd and Interstate 80.
Joe Lstiubrek of Building Science Corp. will be the keynote speaker. Lstiubrek has appeared on the NOVA program “Can Buildings Make You Sick?” He has written numerous books and articles on building science, indoor air quality and durability and has conducted investigations of building failures throughout the country.
Lstiburek will discuss moisture and air problems, air and vapor barriers, durability and construction technology along with “Building Bloopers.” He recently completed a 75-city tour for the Environmental Protection Agency conducting seminars on “Preventing Indoor Air Quality Problems.”
The symposium is targeted to professionals in every phase of housing, including construction, heating and air conditioning installation, inspection, real estate management.
Three afternoon tracts will focus on energy efficiency, radon and indoor air quality. Real estate licensing (Radon Tract - 0023R Intermediate and Energy Track - 0593 Intermediate) and continuing educational credits are available. A vendor show will be offered. Speakers also include Doug Walter, Kansas Science Building Institute, with a demonstration Tell Tale house model illustrating ventilation problems and backdrafting; Bruce Snead, Kansas State University focusing on Radon; Lynn Chamberlin, Nebraska Energy Office focusing on Energy issues; and Tom Heine, from the American Association of Radon Scientists and Technologists. Scott Tafoya will discuss Green Built Homes. Molly Goedeker, Jon Traudt, Garry Ruliffson, Russel Iwan, David Nicholson, Tom Baker, Debbie Kalina, Martin Manhart and Mark Versch, professionals will be involved in panel discussion and presentations on Radon, Energy, Indoor Air Quality and Ventilation.
Space is limited; registration costs $40 if made by Feb. 28, $50 at the door if space permits.
Coordinators are University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, Nebraska Health and Human Services System, Douglas County Health Department, American Lung Association of Nebraska, Nebraska Energy Office and Metropolitan Utilities District along with business representatives from Arid Resources, Johnstone Supply, Arcosanti Homes, ATC Associates, Inc. and Health & Energy Company.
