Hopefully they won't put in it's place the same kind of garbage that got built just to the west of the Travel Inn. That has got to be one of the ugliest new buildings in the City.

Travel Inn Owner Signs Demolition Contract
The owner of Dodge Street's Travel Inn has signed a contract to demolish the old hotel.

The city confirmed on Monday that the hotel near 39th and Dodge streets is scheduled to be demolished, but it isn't clear exactly when that will happen.

It's checkout time for the Travel Inn.

Crews are poised to start tearing down the motel as early as this weekend.
The OWH even worked in a bad 80s action flick one-liner.

And yes, I'm OK with them knocking this one down. :)

What? It wasn't built as a babe, drug and rat infested building! It's not the building's fault!!! :P

Yeah, but it WAS built as a blocky, ugly POS with a parking lot in what should still be a very pedestrain area of town. Good riddance.

And there are certainly different levels of babe. That's one thing which I would say I'm actually jealous of in West O. :)

I hope they can get a decent developer that will make good use of that property.

Omaha Planning Board says no to KFC at old Travel Inn site

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=2 ... d=10148819
The Omaha Planning Board voted Wednesday to recommend denying a request to rezone property at 39th and Dodge Streets, effectively blocking the construction of a new KFC fast food restaurant.
The City Council ultimately decides property rezonings, but takes into account the Planning Board recommendations.

Whoa, way to go planning board. I think they're angling for some sort of substantial structure that impacts the neighborhood in a postive way.

A 20 story highrise would be sweet on that that lot, you'd be able to see it from most parts of the city, since it's right on top of that hill.

Do you think the Josselyn Castle association will be like the Old Market Association that freaks out about anything substantial?

I would say UNMC has far more influence than the neighborhood association.

A twenty story tower would not begin to fit and from what I have seen the Med Center doesnt care much but the neighborhood has been involved in a positive manner and it looks like they have reasonable expectations.

I'm thinking midrise apartment or condo building. 6-10 floors. Maybe ground level neighborhood retail like a drycleaner, a flower shop, etc.  8)

Just don't build a strip-mall like they did on 48th and dodge.  Build something for the hipsters for once.

Is something going on here? I thought I saw some equipment on site, but don't see any permits listed.
