30 Things You Need To Know About Omaha Before You Move There

Very good highlight to things in Omaha including Beercade, CWS, and the zoo. Also, did not know that Bozell, the advertising firm from Omaha, was the one who started the Got Milk? slogan and Pork. The other white meat.

After looking further, it appears that Bozell is known for the milk mustache for the Got Milk campaign. They did have a part in it but were not the creator who coined the phrase.

Southwest Plane Diverted After Unruly Passenger Tries To Open Door Midflight, Witnesses Say
A California-bound Southwest Airlines flight was diverted to Omaha, Neb. on Sunday after witnesses said a passenger tried to open a door.

The captain of the Chicago-to-Sacramento flight landed on Eppley Airfield to "have an unruly passenger removed" before continuing on to Sacramento, the airlines said in a statement.

Considering the amount of people who can't locate their home state on a map of the US or the US on a map of the world, this doesn't surprise me.

Let's give them some credit here, they were close[ish].
When fortune smiles on something as violent and ugly as revenge, it seems proof like no other that not only does God exist, you're doing his will.

The annual Berkshire media bump this weekend. My favorite line from one of the foreign fish wraps.

“Now every year my wife says, ‘Go to Omaha, no problem,’ ” O’Halloran says over a Lucky Bucket lager on the cobblestone streets of the Old Town the night before the meeting.

Omaha museum prepares to display its Rembrandt
The Washington Times wrote:The museum plans to have the “Portrait of Dirck van Os” placed in its Hitchcock Gallery for public viewing on Tuesday after an absence of around 15 years. It’s been restored and embellishments added by others have been removed.

Rembrandt experts have examined the painting and certified it as an original work by the 17th-century Dutch master. The museum has not provided a monetary value for the painting, but Rembrandts have sold in the tens of millions of dollars in recent years.

I found this nice, although perhaps a bit too gushing, article on the joys of visiting Omaha in this Johnson County, Kansas magazine, from July 2914. The Omaha article begins on page 36.

What’s so great about Omaha?

Just saw this on the St. Louis Today website... pretty much all about the zoo from what I read.

Omaha, Neb.

Omaha's historic Old Market entertainment district, next to the downtown business district, is home to gorgeously preserved cobblestone streets dating back to the late 1800s when the area served as the railroad center of the country. It's now a lively area, lined with boutiques, art galleries, restaurants, candy stores, pubs and antique shops.

Thanks for posting that article. I talk about it all the time, but I love these streets. There are so many more that are in eastern Omaha but have been covered up with asphalt.

Sorry if I seem to be a total b*tch here, but those are not cobblestones in the Old Market! Those are bricks, or more correctly paving blocks.

A true cobblestone street is made up of just that, stones, as in rocks, round and irregular, not rectangular.

Sorry, but it kind of annoys me when people around here use terms for various structures that are trendy, quaint or warm and fuzzy but are used improperly. Another is the term "brownstone" for those mass-produced frame rowhouses. Sorry, those ain't brownstones.

Yes, you are correct, the Old Market are brick streets but I am glad that we have been able to retain them in the district.

There are some red and gray stone pavers on Jones St. between 11th & 12th, and in some of the Old Market allies, if I remember correctly. The stone pavers, which are approx 4" x 12", aren't really "cobble stones" like you would find in Europe or old parts of Boston.

But, I don't know why they can't just call the OM streets "Brick".
He said "They are some big, ugly red brick buildings"
...and then they were gone.

Actually, if you read the article they do explain the difference between true cobblestone streets and brick streets and that nowadays they are lumped together to contrast against paved/concrete/asphalt streets.

Sheep in Christmas Sweater Found Wandering the Streets of Omaha
Little Bo Peep can call off her search.

It’s not every day you see a sheep roaming free in a city with nearly half a million people. It’s even rarer — unprecedented, really — to see one dressed in an ugly Christmas sweater.

With the NCAA Tournament going on right now, there's a bunch of articles out there on Omaha right now.

I came across a series of blog articles from NewsOK.com:

Welcome to Nebraska ... where they have Arbor Day, green buildings and mobster steakhouses

Day 2 in Omaha: Lots more basketball than Day 1

Day 3 in Omaha: A long run, weird 80s music and a game to cover

I found it funny how the writer was amazed about I-80 being seven lanes:
About an hour later, we rolled back cross the Nebraska stateline and into Omaha — and soon found ourselves on a seven-lane highway.

Yes, SEVEN lanes in Omaha.

Seven lanes going our direction, and I suspect there were seven lanes going the other way. What are they doing with seven-lane highways in Omaha? I know that the Omaha metro also includes Council Bluffs, Iowa, as well as Offutt Air Force Base, but I thought maybe I’d missed some sort of mass migration. I did a little googling, and I did not miss anything. Omaha’s metro area has a population of 1.3 million. Oklahoma City’s metro area is 1.3 million.

We don’t have seven-lane highways in Oklahoma City!
