As the small-town home of Iowa State University, Ames has the highest student concentration of any of the college towns on this list. It also has the second-lowest unemployment rate, an incredibly low 3.2%.
The essence of my college experience in Ames was definitely how easy it was to get a part-time job at Target.

KC Star highlights Omaha's dinning scene.

http://www.kansascity.com/2013/12/17/46 ... -just.html
Midtown Crossing, Dundee, Benson and the Old Market are amongst Omaha’s sizzling destinations, each offering unique concepts.

There are so many stop-worthy restaurants in Omaha that a long weekend just might not do it. Here are some standouts I experienced … with more to come in a future Chow Town post.

What are you waiting for? Pack up an overnight bag and bring your appetite to Omaha. You’ll need it.

I don't think I've seen this posted anywhere else, but I've been watching the Breaking Bad series on Netflix lately and the lawyer, Saul, says in the second to last episode “If I’m lucky, in a month from now, best-case scenario, I’m managing a Cinnabon in Omaha.” There were a few articles out there mentioning it - http://consumerist.com/2013/10/09/break ... eal-omaha/

Back when this happened I thought to myself, violence toward someone in drag seems more like something a Missourian would do than something a Nebraskan would do. Turns out I'm probably right.
Also before anyone brings up the Brandon Teena thing, that happened in Falls City, which is like the Sudetenland, it is technically in Nebraska, but it is culturally Missouri.

Segment on CNN about the 'thug toddler" video. It gave the impression that omaha and all of nebraska has crime problems.

Not really national, but interesting none the less.

http://www.argusleader.com/article/2014 ... -neighbors
At $588 million, Sioux Falls trailed only Omaha, which logged $832 million in construction value.

Des Moines had $415 million, and Fargo had $377 million.

Sioux Falls total housing numbers also came in second to Omaha. Sioux Falls issued permits for 2,081 housing units compared with Omaha’s 2,534 units. Fargo issued permits for 1,691 units.

We had two threads going for the Discussion about how Omaha is Dangerous for Blacks so I merged them together. Since people seemed to wanted to discuss it, I merged the posts from this thread in to the other thread because the other thread was a stand alone thread and not a hog pog of different discussions.

How much time do you spend in Omaha?
Each year is different. In 2013, I was solidly in L.A. until June. From then on, my home base was here. Although I like my life in Los Angeles, right now I prefer being in Omaha: I have great friends, my parents are here and I’m happy to be around for them and help out. Also, Omaha is blossoming, with flourishing arts, restaurants, hipsters and music. I like witnessing it and being a part of it.

What’s the biggest misperception of the Heartland?
I live in downtown Omaha, which people on the Coast sometimes smirk at. But everywhere is exotic and everything is beautiful if you look at it long enough and with the right generosity of spirit. Omaha in particular — I call it Paris of the Plains — is a very rich city to live in. The other thing: More time is your own. The same slew of errands that cost me 3.5 hours in Los Angeles will cost me 50 minutes in Omaha. I have more time to think, to write; life is simpler here in the best way.

Yes in deed. One of the things that people on the coasts don't realize about life here is how much time gets sucked away doing groceries, banking, car maintenance, etc. Commuting in LA can take 2 hours each way on a good day. So much better to have that extra hour.

Heard that Omaha was going to be rep'd, but missed it. How did it come off. Making fun of the Midwest? Did LA?

It was a Valentine's special edition of Jimmy's segment where he has people find stuff around their home via skype. There was a girl/guy couple from San Diego and our reps from Omaha shown here. The final item Jimmy asked the couples to find... was something the other person didn't know about. In each instance... one member from each couple surprised the other with a ring and a proposal. ;) It was actually pretty good PR for Omaha... one of these guys apparently works for Yahoo here ("What, Yahoo in Omaha?").

I guess for the time being, they'll have to pop over to Council Bluffs to get hitched. Although I understand, that today, another state's same sex marriage ban was overturned... perhaps the days of Nebraska's ban are numbered.

Not exactly national, but a story out of Minnesota:

Omaha, NE Recruits Top MN Boys High School Hockey Players
David McCoy, WCCO wrote:They are also all choosing to pack up, move out of Minnesota and head to the hockey hotbed that is the University of Nebraska Omaha.

In the place famous for steaks, Huskers football and Peyton Manning’s vocal cords, Omaha coach Dean Blais has pulled off quite the recruiting coup in hockey.

How can he get so many of these elite players out of Minnesota?

It starts with his recruiting pitch, which centers on the fact that he’s at the school himself.

Blais won two national titles at North Dakota, which works to his advantage when selling the university to perspective players.

“I picked Omaha because of the coaching,” said Spinner.

However, Blais’ recruiting pitch is a little more involved than that.

It also involves the history, and that there isn’t much when it comes to hockey.

The program started only 17 years ago, so there’s plenty of opportunity for players to be a part of creating a history and traditions.
Looks like they actually came here to shoot the piece.

Theaster Gates, the man behind the Carver Bank project in North Omaha, on the Colbert Report. Just mentions that he works in Omaha in passing at the end, but nice to see the guy's passion for what he does. We are quite lucky to have him involved in our city.

Posted this over in the Bar Rescue thread but thought it could go here also:

'Bar Rescue' host calls Old Market one of the best downtowns in America
Andrea Kszystyniak: World-Herald staff writer wrote:I thought (the Old Market) was one of the best downtown destination areas I’ve seen in America. It’s special. It’s really good to see that there’s great mixology bars, really fun restaurants coming in there, we had some great dinners down there. ... It’s very special, and few cities have an area like that that’s as special. We really enjoyed being there. Honestly, Omaha has a far more sophisticated mixology and restaurant marketplace than many people think, and I thought it was terrific.

Those guys were pretty horrible at anything to do with college football. Couldn't get the Michigan helmet question, where Mack Brown coaches, or who Urban Meyer is.
