Missouri River

Post by almighty_tuna »

For those of you who don't make it to the river very often, maybe stop down in the next evening or two.  I've been working on the riverfront for nearly 7 years and don't remember the river ever being this high.  It's a neat sight.  The water appears to narrowly make it under the rotating railroad bridge upriver.

Josh and I were out looking around tonight.  It is only a few feet from being in Harrah's lot.  It is almost above that steel part of the ped bridge too!

I remember it being a couple feet higher than this in 2007 and 2008, and several feet higher in 1993 and 1996.  But don't worry, it's going to be a couple feet higher yet.

I remember May 2007 the river was almost in Harrah's parking lot.  There was a lot of flooding around Missouri Valley that year.  We had something like 7 inches of rain in an hour one night.

Just for comparison - here is the Platte River near Venice (30 minutes ago) - ice blocks still on the east side of the river.

The Little Sioux is out of it's banks in my hometown area now. It's over a road by Correctionville, IA that only gets covered once in a blue moon. So more water is on it's way, could be interesting.

The Platte has subsided from a few days ago - you could tell it had flooded the banks since there were ice blocks 20 yards in at some places.

The "Crest" is forecast sometime later early tonight or tomorrow morning. Let me tell you. It is really high right now. There is alot of flooding going on just east of Ft Calhoun right now. It is a mess. http://www.crh.noaa.gov/ahps2/hydrograp ... 5,6&type=0

For years the Missouri River has been so darn low.  Nice to see things evening out in that department.  I know that there was a lot of snow to melt upstream, so maybe it will be running more full this year than in the past.

Gosh, I wish it was always this high. It reminds me more of the Mighty Mo in St. Louis this way.

Well that swing in now being engulfed by the river water. See that sign in the background? Well right behind that is California Bend. It is 100% engulfed by water.

We walked by last night & could see that the river had been up that far.  The river is drastically down from late last week now.  Harrah's has regained most of their north parking lot.

Corps to boost Gavins Point releases

http://www.omaha.com/article/20100718/N ... t-releases
www.omaha.com wrote:YANKTON, S.D. — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers said it will start releasing more water from Gavins Point Dam at Yankton in order to evacuate floodwater being stored in the Missouri River reservoirs.

The corps has been limiting discharges because of flooding downstream on the Missouri River. It says downstream conditions have improved so it can begin releasing water that's accumulated in the reservoirs from heavy rain and mountain snowmelt.

At this point, just about all of Western Iowa and Eastern Nebraska is completely saturated.  Big & small rivers are all full, creeks, waterways and even spillways are full.  I've seen massive "lakes" in corn & bean fields in the river valley along I-29.

Just about anything over 1/2 inch is going to quickly find its way into the Missouri River.

...and yes, I'm getting really sick of having to mow my lawn twice per week, even though it's the end of July!

They received anywhere from 2-6" inches of rain thursday  around the Sioux Falls area. The ground up there is also saturated so most of that is going to flow into the Big Sioux which then flows into the Missouri around Sioux City so more water is coming.[/quote]

OMAHA (AP)– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is warning residents in the Omaha area of possible Missouri River flooding.

The Corps’ Robert Ruch says the river is expected to rise to 28.5 feet this weekend, which could cause lowland flooding in parks and campgrounds. Flood stage is 29 feet.

Missouri River Flooding Threatens Major Events Through Summer
Action 3 wrote:NP Dodge Park is already closed. Over at Freedom Park, the banks are swelling. It's expected to close in one to two weeks. At the Lewis and Clark Landing, the Midlands Heritage Festival is expected to stay open this weekend. As for next week's Taste of Omaha and other events through the summer, it's likely they will be forced to move to higher ground. "If public works closes the flood gates then we will cancel all events on the (Lewis and Clark) Landing," said Director of Parks, Recreation and Public Property Melinda Pearson.

Sandbags Prepared As Missouri River Level Rises
“We're anticipating water will be higher than it was in 1993"

WOWT wrote:The Missouri River levels near downtown Omaha stands at 28.5 feet. Flood stage is 30 feet and we'll be over that soon. The Army Corps of Engineers will be releasing overflowing reservoirs next month, which means the river will rise an extra foot every week through June.

I lived in Casper WY for 21 yrs  -- the newspaper out there had a few articles on the snowpack and the flooding expected. Eastern Wyoming -- all drains to either the North Platte or toward the Missouri -- hmm they both come through here.

Snow pack percentages -- State average 227%  to 174%

“The existing water up there is probably the highest it’s ever been on record,” said NRCS Water Supply Specialist Lee Hackleman. “It’s way out of bounds.”
The Upper North Platte Basin on average is now storing the equivalent of nearly 41 inches of water. That’s double the total of this point last year, when late spring storms led to flooding along the North Platte.

When Gallup was built back in 2003, part of the requirements were the site was to be elevated to a 500yr flood plain.  It will be interesting to see how this stacks up to what "500yr flood" is supposed to be.
