Hot Car Accessory May Be Declared Illegal In Iowa

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa -- An Iowa lawmaker has introduced a bill that would make "spinner" rims and hubcaps illegal in the state.

Iowa State Rep. Doug Struyk said spinners on vehicle wheels are unsafe, but those who sell them said they just take some getting used to.

They are the hot trend in car accessories right now. They make the car's wheels look like they're still moving, when they're not. They come in many different styles, and are priced for various budgets.

"It's a big industry," said Mike Kline, of Lyle's Tires and Wheels. "It's going to stay, it's not going anywhere anytime soon."

"It startled me to see something still moving," said Struyk, who wants to see these distractions banned from Iowa. "It created an optical illusion."

Struyk met up with a vehicle with spinners at a two-way stop, and he thought the vehicle was still moving. He said it caused him to slam on his breaks and lose control of his car.

"This has been around for four years, almost every community in the country has them," said Kline in defense of the spinners. "I don't think it's that big of a deal."

The bill to ban spinners has been introduced in the Iowa Legislature and referred to the Transportation Committee.

A decision should be rendered in a couple weeks for whether the bill will move forward.

While we're at it, Mr. Struyk, why don't we ban deer crossings as well? Those damn animals have no comprehension for when a safe time to cross the road is. If we make it illegal for deer to cross the road, and apprehend offending deer, then we can avoid further safety hazards to other easily startled drivers, especially those with animal phobias.

You'll have to forgive Rep. Struyk for being easily confused. He originally ran (and was elected) as a Democrat, and then switched to the GOP on the day before primary last June. If a fella is that easily confused, then how can we expect him to not be confused by the wheel spinners?

Now that's legislative time well spent.
