Prairieland Striking a Blow for Independence in Milk Sales

As other big livestock operations turned to no trespassing signs and security cameras to keep people away, Prairieland's bosses began offering tours of the milking parlor to thousands of people annually in 1998.

When visiting, cow lovers from nearby Lincoln voiced regret about cutting off most of the cows' tails for sanitation reasons, the keepers of a milking herd that has grown to 1,200 stopped that practice and found other ways to meet the cleanliness standard.

When the annual clamor ensues for flavored milk during county fair season, the Hallam processing plant faithfully responds by mixing up the most popular batches: root beer and cotton candy.
