Carnegie Arts Center:
A destination for art enthusiasts in western Nebraska

ALLIANCE, Neb. (KOLN) - The Carnegie Arts Center in Alliance used to be a Carnegie library. Today, the building is a place where people can enjoy art, and admission is always free. We caught up with Kyren Gibson, who is the Co-Director of the Carnegie Arts Center to learn more about this great Alliance attraction. “The building was built in 1911,” Gibson said. “A women’s group got a grant to build Alliance’s first library here. In the 1980′s, the building was in disrepair, and the library relocated. But, there was a local artists’ group that was passionate about maintaining this Carnegie library and repurposing it as an arts center. They generated the funding, received grants, and renovated it into the beautiful venue that we have today.”

The Center is the only arts center within a 60-mile radius. “We are not just serving Alliance,” Gibson said. “We are serving an entire region. We want everyone to know that their art is valuable, that the creative process is valuable. And, we like to focus not so much on the finished product, but the process of making.” Alliance has recently been certified by the Nebraska Arts Council as a “creative district”, and the Carnegie Arts Center is a part of that creative district. Also, as of March 28, 2024, the Carnegie Arts Center is marking its 31st anniversary of serving the community.
