This week, Barron's named Nebraska the best state in the country when it comes to managing government budgets. Iowa was second and South Dakota third — making the tri-state corner near South Sioux City the nation's garden spot when it comes to savvy government finance.

The logically predictable result of Nebraska's native Agrarian Practicalism and the social structures created by people who saw debt wipe people out and realized that foolish borrowing was great for a temporary bump, but would bite you in the backside once things went down.

As bad as they had it, we have to live with gratitude that they both got through the early 20th century and that they were smart enough to see the problems and to build structures that have served subsequent generations well.

One of the things that makes me smile when people from the coast put their nose up at us.
