OWH staff wrote:One of the tornadoes to strike central and eastern Nebraska during that day of severe storms was rated F5 — the strongest possible and the last of that magnitude to hit Nebraska.
Another tornado that day was rated F4 on the 1-to-5 Fujita scale — which though not adopted until the early 1970s, was applied retroactively to tornadoes reported between 1950 and 1972. A third Nebraska tornado that day was rated F2.
F5 storms have winds in excess of 260 mph. The wind in an F4 tops 200 mph.
The Fujita scale was modified and renamed the Enhanced Fujita or EF scale in 2007. No storms recorded prior to that time were recategorized.
Two of the best known tornadoes to strike Omaha were F4s:
» The May 6, 1975, tornado touched down in southwest Omaha and continued north on a route along 72nd Street. Three people died.
» The March 23, 1913, Easter Sunday twister touched down in Ralston and ripped its way north. More than 100 people died in Omaha.

Exciting storm tonight. Incredibly windy. It was interesting that the Weather Channel app on my phone got the tornado warning about two minutes before the sirens went off. Caught me off guard because it made the EAS tone. Never had it do that before. Guess I've never had the app during a storm like this. It was also cool that I could watch KETV's coverage from my phone. I don't have cable and don't have an antenna, so I had no other way to see what was going on.

From Sunday evening:
Re: 2014 weather thread
Here is the Mammatus Photo I got. I have been working to make better "photos" and not just "snap shots" when it comes to weather. I want to create a whole photo that has interest and good composition. Since we were out enjoying mothers day, I was only able to manage this one shot, but I like the way its anchored and kind of framed in with the street. I also like how the clouds kind of lead in from the left. If I could do it all over, I would definitely go back and set up my tripod. It was 20' away and I am not sure why I didn't use it.
I hope to see the "real" Mammatus clouds some day and not the little baby show we got last night.
1. Low Resolution photo posted on FB, I will get a better one posted later when I upload it to my site.

Re: 2014 weather thread
I was in Beaver Crossing today to assist a couple people whose property had sustained damage. It's incredible how quickly people came out of the woodwork to help in that town. I showed up around 10-10:30 and the place sounded like a construction site with all the chainsaws and heavy equipment.
I didn't take too many pictures but here's one. I think behind that tree to the right of the grain elevator was a 500,000 bushel grain bin whose roof had blown open and the corn was exposed with no electricity to get it out.

Andrew J. Nelson / World-Herald staff writer wrote:The National Weather Service confirmed Monday night that two F1 tornadoes hit the Elkhorn-Bennington area Sunday. F1 tornadoes are classified on the Fujita scale as having winds of 86 mph to 110 mph.
The weather service said one twister started near Two Rivers State Recreation Area southeast of Yutan and ended in the Skyline Ranches area in Elkhorn. The other tornado — the one that probably hit the Karthauser home — started one mile northwest of Elkhorn and ended three miles south of Bennington.

That's crazy at the end how it disappears in to thin air.
The Weather Adventures (https://www.facebook.com/WeatherAdventures" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;) had a really nice still photo of the storm too. They always seem to look cool out in Wyoming and up in the the Dakotas where they are not all rain wrapped.

Re: 2014 weather thread
Went to Friend today and drove down Beaver Crossing road and saw the tornado damage from 2 weeks ago and holy smokes did that town take a direct hit. Even worse the town sits on a creek that had a lot of mature trees around it that got torn in half pulverizing the town. Wish my phone took pictures that weren't embarassing to post otherwise I would have grabbed a few for everyone.

The Papio-Missouri River NRD tells FOX 42 it is closely monitoring the levee system along the Papio Creek tonight. If levees are compromised, neighborhoods and businesses could see flooding from 84th and Center down past 60th and Harrison. This is a video animation of what flooding could look like around the 84th and Center area.

Re: 2014 weather thread
When doesn't that underpass flood during a good downpour? They should have those blizzard gates on Saddle Creek, that closes during heavy rain. How many times have we seen this video...
Re: 2014 weather thread
What else do you expect from a waterway that was buried and contained to pipes? I live on the very top of the hill to the east and imagine where Dundee sits to the west, that is a lot of water draining down there. A nice flood control plan would for sure help out .

Yes. I forgot to post that. A friend took a picture of the Papio as it crosses under Center at 92nd, and it looked just like that there...
