I just heard that the old Columbus UP Depot is scheduled to be demolished next year. Plan anyone confirm this?

COLUMBUS — A building that has been in Columbus for more than a century is set to be torn down.

The Union Pacific Railroad train depot on 26th Avenue just north of the tracks is scheduled to be demolished early in 2015.

The building’s close proximity to the tracks and its deteriorating condition is why Union Pacific is moving out, said Mark Davis, director of corporate relations and media for the company.

“It is so close to the railroad tracks we have to have it moved,” Davis said.

The depot is 12 feet from the rails, which is too close for public safety. The minimum requirement is 35 feet or more for a building.

Union Pacific did approach the city a couple of years ago about obtaining and moving the building. City Administrator Joe Mangiamelli said it was too costly, so the city declined.

I recall sitting in that station on a few occasions, waiting for the train to take us to visit family out in Denver. It was still a pretty busy place in the early 60's.

A friend of mine worked for the UP and spent some time in that depot. He said they had to stop meetings when a train came by because its so loud, you can't hear anything.

The close proximity to the tracks probably came in handy for people getting on trains. Too bad they can't find the $ to move it. That would be cool to restore it with the original windows and get rid of the bricked-in openings. Reminds me of the larger old depot near 20th & O in Lincoln that became the Union Bank. In that case they got rid of the tracks instead of the building.

I heard that UP might even help move the building if Columbus would let them permanently close the crossing on the east side of the building.

If I had money, and lets say was an exec at UP or Kiewit or Mutual... I would buy these old depots and make an agreement with games and park and replant these buildings in neighboring parks... Just sayin... Ahem.

Why did they put brick in the windows and remove the feature below the roof?

Not sure the exact reason but usually when you brick up a window it's so they can put walls where the windows are, close off a room, or windows are too big and old so they put in a smaller window like they have.

Wow, that is a shame. I knew it was probably going to happen, but it is a terrible feeling when it does.
