New Hospital in GI

A group of Grand Island doctors is planning to open a second hospital in the community, with Dr. Tom Werner saying an estimated timeline is that it will take at least two years to build a hospital and have it operational.

Werner discussed the plans for the new hospital with The Independent along with Dr. Molly Johnson, Dr. Ryan Crouch and Dr. Brant Luebbe.

“We want to restore local control to the community, provide benefits to the community and keep health care resources in the community,” said Johnson, citing the biggest reasons why local physicians want to open a second hospital.

She said physicians fear that because CHI Health St. Francis is part of a larger network, some of its financial success might be used to support another hospital in the network that is not as financially successful. Luebbe compared the situation to a retail store chain where money from highly profitable stores might be used to make sure a poorly performing store is kept open instead of closing.
Werner said Grand Island physicians are taking a different approach by forming a nonprofit that will have a local board making decisions about hospital operations.

A costly project

Luebbe said it likely will cost a million dollars per bed to build a new hospital. “It’s going to be expensive,” he said.

While no definite plans have been made, Werner said the new hospital could open with 40 to 50 beds.

Werner said the Grand Island physicians have looked at a number of potential sites for a hospital, with the majority of possible locations inside the city limits.

Saying there also may be a couple of sites to consider just outside the existing city limits, he gave no timetable for site selection.

Interesting. Is this a new trend, Dr breaking away and opening independent hospitals?

I heard some private practice Dr's were starting to beak away and form their own groups, but not their own hospital. Of course, I don't follow the medical field very close.

It could be so they can form their own medical protocols and not have it dictated by a large health system, and have it instead tailored to their specific population. That could be a double-edged sword, however. Sometimes, they form their own groups to get around certain rules and such.

Update on the hospital project...

http://www.theindependent.com/news/loca ... 127b6.html

The first phase of a 96-acre development at the southwest corner of Highway 281 and Highway 34 in Grand Island will include a 64-bed hospital, a hotel with conference space and a three-story medical office building.

Work on Phase 1 is scheduled to begin this fall. The full-service hospital will be the anchor tenant for the development, which its backers say is contingent on receiving tax-increment financing.
The select-service hotel with conference space will be attached to the hospital, providing a convenient option for travelers coming off Interstate 80, as well as for family members of patients admitted at the hospital.

The attached medical office building will allow physicians to share services with the hospital as well as being convenient to serve patients quickly and appropriately.

The overall site plan will eventually include office space, residential living, senior living, restaurants, retail and hike-and-bike trails. The design and architectural components will be cohesive throughout the 96-acre development with a planned community concept, the press release said.
Chief Industries will be the master developer for the property, ensuring that the development is focused on supporting the needs and growth of Grand Island, which has a population of 51,000 residents, with a secondary market population exceeding 200,000 residents.

Chief Industries and HDR said the potential development on the southwest corner of Highway 281 and 34 will be the catalyst to spur the growth and vibrancy down the South Highway 281 corridor.

Update on Grand Island Regional Hospital. Completion is expected in the Fall of 2019.

THE DEVELOPMENT WILL BE BROKEN OUT INTO TWO COMPONENTS:
35 acres dedicated for a hospital/medical office building
55 acres available for retail, office and mixed use
The master plan for this development is zoned as commercial development and includes space for additional wellness facilities, a hotel with conference space, mixed use space to include retail and restaurants, walking trails, a public market and much more. This site will engage the community, families and individuals to work, live, play and learn in this space. The connectivity of the entire development allows the public to interact with a variety of services quickly and easily. This development will provide a vibrant, pedestrian friendly development for local residents and visitors alike.

The 170,000-square-foot facility is being constructed at the corner of highways 281 and 34. It will be a full-service, acute-care hospital with an emergency room, maternity care services, surgical care and intensive care unit.

The four-floor hospital cost about $70 million.
Grand Island-based Chief Construction Co. and Sampson Construction of Omaha are the general contractors of the project.

Speicher said the 64-bed hospital will provide a great health care experience for patients.

The former Kearney Regional Medical Center CEO came to lead the new hospital in Grand Island three months ago to be part of a physician-lead organization.

“It got me very excited to come over here and succeed,” Speicher said.

He thinks the addition of the hospital to the community is significant.

“It’s important because the physicians want to be part of an organization they can help lead and control and provide a unique patient care experience,” he said.

Recruitment of physicians will be underway shortly. Overall, Speicher said the hospital will employ 300-400 people, which he sees as another positive.
