2015-2016 Winter Storms

Welcome to Winter this morning. Listening to the Police Scanner it sounds like there are dozens of PIAs out there and even Cruisers that are getting stuck. I thought today was supposed to be around the 50's according to Monday's weather reports , but I heard snow last night, so I got up early to get to work and I guess I just missed everything that began to happen after 6:30...

At about 9am, a co-worker and myself noticed that the westbound West Dodge Expressway was not moving... Its now 9:50 and the same vehicles are still in the same spots.

Within the last few minutes I have heard of at least two people jumping out of their sliding cars and getting pinned between cars...

I flew out on the 24th. 9:30 flight - first sat in the plane for almost an hour at the gate - heavy snow couldn't take off. Disembarked and back on the plane a little after 12. Waited for deicing for over an hour and finally did take off. Arrived at destination approx 5 hrs late.

Oh by the way it was mid 80s here in Tampa today. :D

I hate the snow, but at least I have an excuse to work from home tomorrow!

It was totally clear where I live. Didn't have any trouble getting in at all.

Talking heads now say far less than predicted.

Yes, last night there was a prediction map posted that showed the cooler air already moving east, making way for the storm to go more easterly than predicted earlier, we should only get the tail end of this system.

When I drove this AM between 6 and 6:30 it was strange in that as I was coming East on I80 there was nothing new or even flurries until about 72nd street. Got to a line and it was flurries / snow coming down and at the same point the intestate was mostly white already. No depth to speak of but it stood out how much of a line there was and not flurries or snow for a while before the stuff was showing on the roads.

I had the exact thing happen. There was no light snow in Millard, but when I got around 72nd St at 6:30 the light stuff was just beginning to fall.
Weather maps are showing the storm hitting us from the SE.

Both wind AND snow could potentially impact the area on Tuesday. This storm they're predicting sounds super serious.

So it seems like this storm isn't going to be nearly as bad as hyped. The snow didn't start until 5 and the Weather Channel app on my phone is now only saying 1-3".

I would check your app.

Where I am at right now near I80 and 24th street there is more than 3" new snow already.

Less that 30 miles from Omaha they had over a foot. Better safe that sorry. I also saw that Grand Island had 18+ inches earlier today!

I think the problem is that snow has such a dramatic effect on people that people focus on the forecast a lot more. If they call for 1 inch of rain and we get 4, nobody cares...

Sun today was great. Can't complain about a clean driveway and actually got the end of it cleaned off, that is usually a hunk of ice until March!

Grand Island ended up with 18.3"... that equals 3 days of no school around here.

What they were predicting was lots of snow and wind. For the most part Omaha received the heavy wet snow. This storm stayed West and north of us with drifting there. As was mentioned GI and Hastings had a lot of both and I talked to someone in Dakota Dunes SD and they had 15" with drifting.

Predicting snow storm paths and amount of accumulated snow is still an evolving science. Most of the forecast models still don't do this very well. I was at a conference several years ago with NOAA meteorologists. This was in a city that had indian casinos and one of the meteorologists had save up his quarters to play the slots. His meteorologist friend said "Why do you want to come here to gamble? You play the odds writing your forecast every day at work."

Hastings got about 15.4" of snow, 1 day of no work and 2 day of no school day for my wife who works for Hastings Public School, snow plows were out in forces on wednesday morning for the first pass then later that day they did another pass and the streets were drive-able again, i'm just glad we are getting closer to spring.

I had the good wisdom to take my winter vacation from late January to February 7th, in a much warmer climate. I work a lot in Grand Island, and kiddingly told my friends there to make sure they melted all of the snow before I returned to work there on the 17th. We all had a good laugh. But...virtually all of the snow was melted when I returned to work!

I've grilled out several times this winter. There hasn't been a month this winter I wasn't able to grill out at least once or twice.
