NPS wants Rocky Ford on the Niobrara

National Park Service — accused of trying 'to slide this by' — has been quietly working to buy Rocky Ford rapids on Niobrara

Paul Hammel / World-Herald Bureau wrote:LINCOLN — Quietly, over the last few months, the National Park Service has been working to buy Rocky Ford, an iconic stretch of white-water rapids on the scenic Niobrara River.

But the purchase — designed to provide public access for kayakers and canoers and possibly establish a public park — has been put on hold after an emphatic rejection by local officials, as well as questions from the state’s congressional delegation.

I was surprised to see this today. I have been to Rocky Ford many times, probably my favorite place to camp on the Niobrara.

Are the other outfitters worried that it would only cost $7/day for group camping vs $7 per person? People could bring their own tubes and save $38/person.

I am for this deal with the limited knowledge I have.
