US 281 In Grand Island

Post by mrsticka »

Could you imagine it being a full freeway-like road from I-80 to Airport Drive?

It'll never happen obviously. Too many buildings in the way. They'd have to be torn down to make room for on and off ramps and I don't think many Grand Island residents would be too happy about that.

But still, I wonder that at times. US 281 being an interstate-like freeway from said distance.

I've wondered this as well. I definitely think it's possible. They could build the freeway narrow just like 480 is north of I-80. I'd love to see it come to fruition! I think if this happened, there would be a development boom between Grand Island and I-80.

Not so fast, from what many say on this forum is that freeways are bad.

With your non-Interstate U.S. highways which go through small towns, bypasses are more of an issue.

I think freeways have their place. Although I always support increased density, Grand Island's challenge is accessibility and visibility from the interstate...It has no-one. I think a freeway that could take you from they interstate to the airport in 20 mins would be great for the community and lead to more development.

Did you know that Nebraska was the first state to complete its mainline interstate route?
