150th Birthday Celebrations

Post by Coyote »

Now that Omaha's 150th Birthday celebrations have passed, other communities throughout Nebraska will be celebrating theirs.

Columbus turns 150 this years and have scheduled many Sesquicentennial Events that include their Columbus Days June 27-July 4, the Nebraska Balloon Rally July 14-16 and something called the United Way Duck Derby on August 11th.

I just received this e-mail today and haven't checked to see what other communities are planning Sesquicentennial events in the coming years, but there should be plenty of places to go - for those who are interested.

After a quick search I could only find:

Fremont's Sesquicentennial, John C. Fremont Days, July 14-16, along with a special one-day event on Founders' Day, Aug. 23.

150th Anniversary of North Bend the weekend of the 23nd Annual Dodge County Old Settlers Days June 24th & 26th, 2006 in North Bend, Nebraska.

Possible Events during the Ponca Sesquicentennial, Summer 2006 June 23-25 (Days of ′56 Rodeo) through August 4-6 (Nifty ′50s Weekend)

Apparently Grand Island had theirs in 2002

Uehling was platted on December 6, 1905 and incorprated on November 20, 1906 - so they must be celebrating their 100th birthday this year.

Yes. I found out Uehling is a very small village in Dodge County, that has one of Nebraska's Historical Barns.
It may be worth a trip there just to see. I have thought of trying to find some of Nebraska's Barns:

The Uehling Barn

The only Barn photo I have is Omaha's Ackerhurst Dairy Barn:

Nice.

I hope they do some art that reflects Nebraska's contribution to the arts and sciences (including the two Nobel Prize winners from Nebraska.)

150 years ago this week, the Senate voted to make Nebraska a state. But the bill would have to overcome a presidential veto.

http://www.omaha.com/news/nebraska/year ... be581.html
By David Hendee / World-Herald staff writer wrote:Nebraska’s fitful path to statehood inched ahead 150 years ago this week in Omaha and Washington, D.C.

The U.S. Senate passed the statehood bill on Jan. 9, 1867, and sent it to the House, which took it up the next day and passed it six days later. Nebraska would achieve statehood 45 days later, but not before overcoming a presidential veto.
