Federal habitat plan is devised for Platte
Efforts to undo some of the more than 100 years' worth of human damage to the Platte River ecosystem passed a milestone Tuesday.
After 13 years of negotiation, the U.S. Department of the Interior finalized a plan to prevent endangered and threatened species along the Platte River from going extinct.
The plan manages river flows and requires additional land conservation in Nebraska. It is one of the last steps necessary for Nebraska, Colorado, Wyoming and the federal government to reach an agreement committing them to almost $200 million in work.
Most of that money would flow into Nebraska to pay for habitat for the birds and fish threatened with extinction.
