Upstairs Downtown Tour - GI
Sunday was the first "Upstairs Downtown Tour" in GI, sponsored by the Downtown Development Association. 5 buildings were open to the public for exploration.
First stop, the Masonic Temple:
Note the fancy mailbox, connected by chute to each of the above floors. I regret not taking more pictures in the lobby, including all of the marble work.
Some folks chose to ride the vintage elevator...
a typical hallway from the first few floors. This is from the 3rd floor, currently housing a few private offices:
One of many currently vacant offices. the building was just purchased and many former offices will be converted to apartments.
The 5th floor lodge:
the 6th and 7th floor lodge (please excuse the crummy focus, best I could do in those big rooms:
View from the top floor:
Next, loft apartments in another downtown building:
Office suites above the former Woolworths:
A relic from days gone by. this is part of a yet to be renovated upstairs. One apartment is finished, this side remains to be worked on, but then we'll lose a site like this one...
Another shot during our walk. This is the Bartenbach Gallery building, which formerly housed an opera house in the upper two levels. The Yancey Condos are seen to the right
Here's hoping the work continues downtown and the tours continue as well.
