You're welcome my friend.. This is excellent news for Omaha and an indicator of a strong economy. This news is more important than some may realize..

Plus, I'm a big time numbers and stats nerd for stuff like this :thumb: ...

Well of course. We are a pretty good amount larger than them.

While it's great to have some competition between our cities I feel like there's too much focus between us and them for some reason even though there are cities that are more comparitable for both of our cities. I see this pissing match on their site all the time too. And they love to come onto ours and pull off some of our comments and then talk |expletive| about us. Dave, you actually were recently mentioned there.

I know there is some inferiority about them having a better skyline but overall I'd say we are ahead by a lot and I'm not really worried about them ever passing us up. Don't get me wrong - I think they are a great and cool city with lots going for them. They are just not really on the same level - especially when you look at the events that come to our cities, Fortune 500 & 1000 companies, infrastructure, etc. I know they hit above their belt in many areas and that's awesome. But so do we and even though they've managed to get ahead for the time being in some areas I feel like in the long run we are better off.

I don't wish bad things on Des Moines, and I don't think Omaha is superior--although my preference is quite clear. I think comparing Omaha to other regional cities gives us a good gauge for what we are doing well and which areas need improvement.

I think Des Moines has some things going for it that Omaha can learn from: cleaner streets, a downtown that is more thoughtfully designed, more progressive politics, and their median income is higher than Omaha's so it's more wealthy per capita.

That being said I think anything is possible and in the future I would like to see Omaha maintain its place in the region.

As for being a celebrity on the Des Moines forum, I really can't be held responsible for that. I've never said anything disparaging about Des Moines beyond my own personal experiences. Hopefully some good ideas and thoughtful conversations will result!

I'd be curious to see the GDP per capita, which is a better measure generally.

Des Moines downtown more thoughtfully designed? Aside from the Sky-walks, how exactly?

Sorry, I'm not saying you did anything wrong. Just saying some on there tend to take comments from here they may not like and then attack us on it. Just letting you know that you came up in one discussion. And I'm sure this will probably cause me to be brought up now...

Anyways the main point is the pissing match gets a little tiring - especially some on here who whine because they have some prospective towers in the works and we don't. Their momentum will wind down as the market gets saturated and the tables may likely change at that point. I think both of our cities go through cycles like that and now is just not our time. I'm guessing we'll see things start going our way next decade.

I do like when we list out comparisons of our regional peer cities because you are right about it being a gauge. But I personally could do without the booyahs.

This..

And another reason in my opening post, I mentioned a few cities which I consider Omaha's true peers- Buffalo, Tulsa, Tuscon, Albuquerque (there are others).. And Omaha out ranks them all in GDP..

Des Moines is a fine metro in its own right..and truly punches above its weight.. But so does Omaha. And with Omaha being a full 300,000 larger, I don't necessarily consider them a true peer.. But the reality is, they are the major metros in each of their (neighboring) states and only 130 miles apart.. The comparisons between the 2 are inevitable.. Especially from city boosters on both sides...

Sorry about that HR, I was being sarcastic. I think it's hilarious that someone in Des Moines forum would be offended at anything I've said about the city--especially because I can't think of anything truly worthy of offense. I'm going to look for this in the Des Moines forum now :-)

I don't consider "cleaner downtown" a positive for Des Moines. I did not like the vibe at all. It felt too sanitized and disney-fied. I like a little grunge with my urban center.

I was curious about the same thing, so I divided the GDP by the MSA Population. And to make it a more tangible number (to me at least)I multiplied the result by 100. I didn't think real hard on my methodology so it might be all wrong. But here is a sampling of the results I computed for the top 200 MSAs.

Omaha: 6.4557 (GDP/capita); 36 (Rank)
Albuquerque, NM: 4.7033 117
Birmingham-Hoover, AL: 5.5936 64
Buffalo-Cheektowaga-Niagara Falls, NY: 4.973 97
Cedar Rapids, IA: 6.8298 25
Colorado Springs, CO: 4.2774; 152
Davenport-Moline-Rock Island, IA-IL: 5.0940 88
Denver-Aurora-Lakewood, CO: 6.8639 23
Des Moines-West Des Moines, IA: 7.4742 13
Jacksonville, FL: 4.6608 120
Kansas City, MO-KS: 6.0177 46
Lincoln, NE: 5.8017 56
Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway, AR: 5.3676 75
Memphis, TN-MS-AR: 5.3029 77
Milwaukee-Waukesha-West Allis, WI: 6.4864 33
Minneapolis-St. Paul-Bloomington: 7.0584 20
Nashville-Davidson-Murfreesboro-Franklin, TN: 6.2109 41
New Orleans-Metairie, LA: 6.2142 40
Oklahoma City, OK: 5.3015 78
Sioux Falls, SD: 7.4357 15
St. Louis, MO-IL: 5.5156 69
Tucson, AZ: 3.5834 186
Tulsa, OK: 5.5661 65
Wichita, KS: 4.8825 105

If you combine the Omaha and Lincoln MSAs: 6.2849 37

I don't know if the link here will work but it is to the spreadsheet that compares population, GDP and Nielsen DMAs. (Don't get me started on DMAs.)

My son got a 27 on his ACT. No this score is not as high as what Jeff's son achieved. But one has to remember the paternal gene-pool my son has to overcome. On a PGPAB [Paternal Gene-Pool Adjusted Basis], my son's score is a 37 and Jeff's son's PGPAB ACT score is 19.

That shakes out just about as I would imagine (I assume the results are in 10s of thousands?), with Des Moines surpassing Omaha quite easily; what DOES surprise me is Cedar Rapids and Sioux Falls being so high.

Assuming what I say next has some elements of truth, Cedar Falls and Sioux City don't really surprise me.

Cedar Rapids has always had a heavy concentration of industry and recently has pulled in some insurance and financial companies too. Sioux Falls was making big headlines a few years (decades?) back when CitiCorp placed big operations there and several other financials followed. Of course this is all on a per capita basis.

Stayed at 52 for 2016.
And still ranking ahead of peer metro cities- Tulsa OK, Tucson AZ, Albuquerque NM and Buffalo/Rochester NY among others..

Nice, steady growth for the Omaha metro GDP..
