I have no idea how the one at Crossroads does not make the lists. Went by it the other night after I stopped at Barnes and Noble. Less than 10 cars around Sears. Do they still use all 3 floors or did the close of the top?

Doesn't the Crossroads Sears have some sweet lease deal where they only pay like 5 sheckels per month for a period longer than anyone signing the lease agreement could have expected to live?

They do have a great lease, but you still need to bring in enough money to pay employees and to keep the lights on.

As long as the parent company has cash to operate, it's easier to keep locations open rather than the insanely complex task of closing stores and liquidating inventory.

Oh come on. They don't need tax deductions. They lose money. They don't pay taxes if there is no profit. Underperforming store=losing money. Amazon the great almost seems like more fake news dont it? If everybody is buying half their stuff from Amazon then how come I don't see the UPS stopping at every other house as it goes down the street? I don't buy nothing from Amazon nor does almost everyone I know. On the other hand every woman I know from young to old is going up to the store to buy something every chance they get.

I buy every once in awhile from Amazon. Just picked up some walking/jogging shoes that were at least $10 cheaper than a couple of other web sites I usuallly purchased shoes from.GrandpaaSmucker wrote:Amazon the great almost seems like more fake news dont it? Also Amazon is hiring
Amazon held a jobs fair on Wednesday to hire 50,000 people in its warehouse facilities.
But the company is also adding salespeople for AWS and its advertising business at a faster pace.
It likely signals Amazon's cloud and advertising businesses are dealing with bigger corporate customers that pay larger checks.

Read up on sample sizes vs. population sizes in statistical analysis. Your example is akin to scooping a glass of water in the ocean, finding no fish, and surmising there's no life in the ocean.GrandpaaSmucker wrote:Amazon the great almost seems like more fake news dont it? Re: Sears
Having experience in retail I can tell you that at least in Omaha, most people still do the majority of their shopping brick and mortar. Amazon doesn’t mean all brick and mortar gets eliminated, it just weeded out those extra companies who were able to make a profit during the height of shopping malls and big commercialism when teenagers hung out at malls for fun. The same thing is happening in the TV industry with smaller niche channels dying out to YouTube and Netflix.
On another note I do think that Amazon is very large and will need to be broken up by anti trust pretty soon, probably in the next decade or two. They’re essentially turning the retail market into a monopoly, and not only that because amazon is sticking their hand in almost every market available.

Re: Sears
Market value is the worst way to show how big Amazon is. Wal-Mart has more than 3x the revenue of Amazon, and Amazon's revenue includes all their AWS hosting services.
As buildomaha mentioned, Amazon is forcing small declines in foot traffic that produce disproportionately large shock waves in the commercial real estate world. The shock waves are so large because many shopping centers and stores were barely profitable or perhaps even unprofitable--they couldn't sustain any dip in traffic.

Re: Sears
The Amazon affect, at this point anyway, is no different that the Walmart effect when they have rolled into smaller communities. It is a sky is falling senerio by some. They do impact some businesses in a Neg way but there are also those smaller businesses that benefit because all of a sudden there are more people coming to town. The latter part is not duplicated with Amazon but they do not bring the sky is falling end game for everyone either.

Sears will close another 72 stores as sales plunge and losses grow.
The beleaguered retailer said that it has identified about 100 stores that are no longer turning a profit, and the majority of those locations will be shuttered soon.
Sears lost $424 million, or $3.93 per share, for the period ended May 5. It earned $245 million, or $2.29 per share, a year earlier, a quarter that included a $492 million gain tied to the sale of the Craftsman brand.
Revenue tumbled more than 30 percent to $2.89 billion, with store closings already underway contributing to almost two thirds of the decline.

All Nebraska Sears stores are spared in this latest store closing carousel.. From the W-H:
“Sears will close another 72 stores as sales plunge and losses grow, but none of the company's stores in Nebraska were among those slated for closing.
Sears has stores in Omaha at Crossroads and Oak View Malls.
The beleaguered retailer said that it has identified about 100 stores that are no longer turning a profit, and the majority of those locations will be shuttered soon.”..

Sears, kmart...the patient is dead & doesn't even know it. Worse, they don't care. No maintenance, sloppy if nonexistent inventory, understaffed, unmotivated staff & management (how on earth could they be motivated?)...i could go on.
There is a chain here called Meijer that puts both Sears and Kmart to rest. Clean, huge, wide variety of inventory from quality food to clothing to hardware, etc. If you ask where something is any staff will not just point but take you to it. AND Meijer is actually adding stores. What a difference.

Re: Sears
Meijer has just gone down the path HyVee is beginning to take... supermarket chain, expanding into more general retail.
People will always frequent their favorite 'local' grocer... so as retail falters elsewhere, you take advantage of new opportunities.

I’ve mentioned this before on the forum- When I was in college, I worked at Kmart for 2 years back in the early 80’s. It was a great store, great staff and a great place to work.. My, how the retail world (and the world in general) has changed in the last 35 years...

Re: Sears
Not so terribly long ago, Sears was criticized for being the "Walmart" of the 60's and 70's. Between their retail stores and catalogs, they owned Sears Auto Centers, Craftsman tools, DieHard batteries, Allstate Insurance, Discover Cards, had a huge market share with Silvertone home electronics, Hotpoint and Coldspot appliances, and what am I missing?
Selling off all the assets of the others still isn't saving the retail operation...
