From the Fremont Tribune, second quarter profits of 67% from last year.  It looks like they are going to invest quite a bit of money in Texas. I wish Nebraska was seeing it.

Union Pacific moving record trainloads of coal

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_pg=46&u_sid=2292672
Union Pacific Railroad said Wednesday that it is moving record trainloads of coal from Wyoming's Southern Powder River Basin and mines in Colorado and Utah.

During November, the Omaha-based Union Pacific moved 20 million tons of coal from the basin, Colorado and Utah, an increase of nearly 8 percent from November 2005.

The railroad averaged 35.7 trains a day in the basin last month, its third-best average daily performance there. U.P. averaged 11.6 trains per day moving Colorado and Utah coal, its best daily train numbers of the year.

U.P.'s trains also were heavier in October and November. Trains moving coal out of the Wyoming basin averaged 15,135 tons each, 200 tons more than last year's annual average.

U.P. profits jumped by 24 percent in 1st quarter

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1 ... id=2368846
Union Pacific Corp. today reported a 24 percent jump in net income in its first quarter, driven by improved pricing and increased efficiency.

Net income for the three months ended March 31 was $386 million, or $1.41 per share, compared with $311 million, or $1.15 per share in the same quarter last year.

The results beat projections the Omaha-based railroad made in January, when it forecast first-quarter earnings per share of $1.25 to $1.35.

Union Pacific said it expected earnings growth of 10 percent to 15 percent in its second quarter.

U.P.'s stock rose more than 2 percent in early trading today on the New York Stock Exchange, to $116.28.

The stock of all major freight railroads in North America received a boost earlier this month, when Warren Buffett disclosed that his company, Berkshire Hathaway, had an 11 percent stake in Union Pacific rival BNSF Railway Co. Buffett also said Berkshire had invested in two other, unnamed railroads.

Shipping volume during Union Pacific's first quarter fell 2 percent, but revenue increased 4 percent to $3.85 billion from $3.7 billion the year before. Winter storms - particularly in Nebraska and Wyoming - and a softer housing market contributed to the decline in volume, the railroad said, as did decreased domestic intermodal volume, or the hauling of goods in containers that can be transferred to trucks.

Deadly crash could speed use of safety controls U.P. has worked on for years

http://www.omaha.com/index.php?u_page=1 ... d=10455580
JOE RUFF WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Union Pacific could spend up to $1 billion on technology that would automatically stop a train before an accident occurs as it meets a congressional mandate to implement the system by 2015, railroad officials said.

The nation's major railroads could spend similar amounts, depending on their size, spokeswoman Donna Kush said.

Union Pacific has been developing and testing "positive train control" since 1994. It has spent nearly $100 million thus far and could spend $700 million to $1 billion, Kush said. The expense is worth the safety, efficiency and fuel conservation improvements the systems could deliver, she said.

"We were pursuing it without a government mandate," said Mike Rock, U.P.'s vice president of external relations in Washington.

But a deadly collision in Los Angeles last month involving a commuter train and a Union Pacific freight train added urgency to a train safety bill that awaits President Bush's signature after Congress passed it Oct. 1.

U.P. freight volumes rising

http://www.omaha.com/article/20090909/MONEY/709109980
By Joe Ruff WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Union Pacific executive Rob Knight told analysts Wednesday that freight volumes were slowly improving but to not expect a traditional Christmas peak because retailers were taking a cautious approach to consumer spending over the holidays.

“Over the last several years, frankly, what used to be a spike of a peak became more of a bump, and right now we're not even seeing much of that,” said Knight, chief financial officer for U.P. “I think folks are going to be very cautious about building too high of inventory.”

The third quarter of July through September typically is busy with rail cars hauling televisions, toys and other consumer items as stores restock shelves for Christmas. But consumers are trimming their spending as job losses mount in the nation's deepest recession since World War II.
By Joe Ruff WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITER wrote:Freight volumes for July and August improved over the first half of the year in the automobile, chemicals and intermodal sectors but remained well below what the railroad could handle, Knight said.

Agriculture volumes should grow with the coming harvest, and steel shipments improved somewhat, he said.

Weekly carloadings in Union Pacific's 23-state network increased from an average of 142,000 in the April and May period to 163,000 in the week ending Aug. 29 but remained about 17 percent below year-ago levels, Knight said.

About 4,500 train crew members were furloughed by the end of August, compared with an average of 5,300 in April and May, he said.

Magazine: UP good career starter

http://www.omaha.com/article/20090930/MONEY/709309905
The Associated Press on http://www.omaha.com wrote:Union Pacific has been named one of the best places to start a career.

Business Week ranked the Omaha-based railroad No. 28 in this year's list of the best places to get started in the working world.

UP's human resources vice president Barb Schaefer says being recognized in the magazine is an honor. She says even though hiring has slowed because of the economy, the railroad expects a number of openings in next few years because of retirements.

The magazine used three pieces of information to build its list. Business Week surveyed career counselors at U.S. colleges, and it conducted a survey of 60,000 undergraduates about their top choices for employment. And the magazine asked those companies to complete a survey about their hiring, benefits and training.

Union Pacific Railroad Unveils No. 2010 Boy Scouts of America Commemorative Locomotive

http://www.uprr.com/newsinfo/releases/c ... outs.shtml

Image
www.uprr.com wrote:Special Locomotive Celebrates Scouting’s 100-year History

Houston, Texas, March 31, 2010 – Union Pacific Railroad today unveiled the UP No. 2010 Boy Scouts of America Locomotive, created as a tribute to the organization's centennial celebration. The UP No. 2010 honors Scouting's 100-year impact on the nation and the many Scouting enthusiasts in Union Pacific's work force and communities.

"Union Pacific and the Boy Scouts of America have played leadership roles in shaping America's history. With the UP No. 2010, we are proud to celebrate 100 years of Scouting, progress and patriotism," said Robert W. Turner, Union Pacific senior vice president-Corporate Relations.

"We are deeply honored by the tribute Union Pacific has given to Scouting through the creation of the commemorative locomotive," said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. "We also owe a great deal of gratitude to our UP employee Scouting alumni base, which has spearheaded the movement to create the UP No. 2010. Their efforts mean that for years to come, the locomotive will serve as a reminder of the impact millions of Scouts have had on this country for 100 years."

A very rare honor, Union Pacific has created only 14 commemorative locomotives in its nearly 150-year history. The Boy Scouts-themed locomotive is decorated with a series of four distinct graphics:

The national Boy Scouts of America logo;
The BSA's 100th Anniversary logo;
The words "100 Years of Scouting," and,
Ten emblems representing stages of Scouting and an 11th emblem for the 2010 National Scout Jamboree

The UP No. 2010 locomotive will celebrate the BSA's centennial as it hauls the freight that supports America across Union Pacific's 32,000-mile, 7,000-community network. Because it is one of the newest and most fuel-efficient locomotives, the UP No. 2010 likely will carry service-sensitive consists such as automotive and intermodal trains.

The Fremont to Missouri Valley project is just entering its second year.  In fact the first segment of double track is about to be activated next week.  That segment runs from West Blair (Near Dana College) to Kennard.  They have also already worked on most of the grading from Missouri Valley to California Junction and are ready to start laying track in that section soon.  The Mo Valley to California Junction sections will also have two sidings for Crew Changes.

Union Pacific wrote:Omaha, Neb., March 02, 2012 – Union Pacific Corporation announced today that its Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer James R. Young will take a medical leave of absence from his responsibilities as President and Chief Executive Officer while he is being treated for recently diagnosed pancreatic cancer. He will remain Chairman of the Board during his treatment. Pursuant to a long-established plan for such situations, John J. Koraleski, executive vice president-Marketing and Sales, will serve as Acting President and CEO during Mr. Young's absence.

Steven Rogel, Union Pacific's lead independent director, said: "The board has a great deal of confidence in Jack, Rob Knight our CFO, Lance Fritz our head of Operations, and the entire management team. We are confident that our company will continue to provide great service to our customers while meeting the financial and safety objectives we have set for ourselves and our shareholders expect."

Since joining the railroad in 1972, Koraleski has held a number of executive positions including Controller of Union Pacific Corporation and Executive Vice President-Finance and Chief Financial Officer of Union Pacific Railroad. He also has held positions in the railroad's Information Technologies, Real Estate, and Administrative departments. He earned both a bachelor's and master's degree in business administration from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

"As Jim undergoes his treatment, he has the prayers and support of all 45,000 employees of the UP Team. Our commitment to him, our customers, and our shareholders is continued strong performance of our Company and another record-setting year for Union Pacific," Koraleski said.

The use of a medical leave of absence by the Chief Executive Officer is consistent with company policy established several years ago by the board of directors to ensure management continuity in the case of a change in the status of the CEO. The policy and the assignment of an acting CEO are reviewed regularly by the board's corporate governance and nominating committee.

UP is doing really well lately.

http://www.omaha.com/money/more-jobs-lo ... cf4b4.html
Union Pacific Railroad has boosted hiring plans and aims to add 200 new locomotives next year to improve network congestion, the company said at an investor conference Wednesday in Chicago.

“We have been short of train crews,” acknowledged Chief Operating Officer Lance Fritz, speaking at the conference. “We have more than doubled the hiring we originally planned.”

The Omaha-based railroad said this month it intends to hire 3,600 train, engine and yard workers this year and buy 261 new locomotives, up from the 3,200 hires and 229 locomotives announced in July. Network congestion among the nation’s seven Class 1 freight railroads has slowed average train speeds and increased the time trains spend idle, angering grain shippers and coal-burning electric utilities.

Right now all of the railroads are struggling with volume (especially BNSF). The explosion (pun not intended) of fracturing is mostly to blame. Somebody's got to ship that oil and natural gas, after all. It's going to take the railroads a while to catch up with the increase in demand but at least it's jump starting capital investment in infrastructure.

Union Pacific to cut 'several hundred' management jobs in Omaha, elsewhere

Union Pacific said Wednesday it plans to eliminate “several hundred” management jobs in Omaha and elsewhere in the coming months, as the largest U.S. freight railroad faces slumping cargo volume.
The job cuts will come from “terminations and attrition,” said Omaha-based Union Pacific, employer of about 8,000 Nebraskans and almost 50,000 people nationwide.
