Printing Press

Post by Timmys Treehouse »

Specialty Finishing here in Omaha is currently installing two brand new 56" printing presses, a two month process.  This kind of thing doesn't happen very often.  In fact, only one of these type of machines have been installed in america in the last two years and their putting in two at once.  I'd imagine not too many people have an opportunity to see this kind of equipment so I thought I'd share some shots of the first few weeks.  I'll post a time lapse of the entire installation sometime in August.

How about a caption contest for this first one?

Here is the link to the time lapse video I've been working on.  It would have been a lot easier if I knew what I was doing.
I shot just over 40,000 images over a two month period.  Most of those were deleted as they didn't show any production but I never knew when they were going to do something.  This video ended up with around 5,000 shots.

For this Video I used:
Canon 5D
17-40mm f/4 L
Stop Shot Module as Intervalometer
GE 24-Hour Plug-In Basic Timer (this $5 timer worked better than the one in the $300 Stop Shot)
Canon DR-400 DC Coupler connected to the CA-PS400 as AC power source

Here is a link to the same installation from another view.  It was approximately the same amount of shots taken/used as the previous video.

For this one I used;
Canon 40D
10-22mm f/3.5-4.5
Stop Shot Module as Intervalometer
GE 24-Hour Plug-In Basic Timer
And just changed the battery literly every single day

I bought the 40D new and estimate it has around 200,000 shutter releases on it now.  I bought the 5D used so I have no idea how many shots it has on it but it's still going.

Anyone want to buy a "gently used" 40D?  Just kidding, I hope to use that thing until one of us dies.

I forgot to mention I used Quick Time Pro ($29.99 from apple) @24 fps every night to create the image sequence and iMovie to put them all together.  I was very happy with Quick Time Pro but iMovie gave me some headaches.

I also wanted to ask if anyone has any software (Mac) recommendations for these kind of projects.

I used to work regularly with FCP and that was fine until their latest version bombed. Lately I've been doing my time lapses in After Effects and/or Premier Pro and am really enjoying the way the Production Premium suite works together. A cheaper option would be Premier Elements and would assume it would work similarly.

Yes, it's simple and the price is right.  I've never worked with anything else though so I couldn't say it's the "best".

After putting in the two new printing Press's, Specialty Finishing needed to install a new Die Cutter to keep up with them.  Here is a link to the installation of that peace of equipment.

I tried to use all the same gear for this shot as I did for the printing press video.  Unfortunately, the mirror on the 5D fell off about 15 days into the project.  A relatively easy fix but still, I decided to replace it with a 5D mark 2 so I wouldn't risk loosing another day.  The 40D held on through the whole project (that thing is a tank).  I'll post a link to the angle I shot with that camera soon.

About 10,000 stills were taken for each angle and around 2,500 made it into the final cut.

For the next installation I'm going to set up a GoPro Hero3 Black Edition as well as the SLR's.  I'm anxious to see the side by side comparison.

Thanks for showing me how to create that link Brad, I've been wondering how that was done.

Although I like the first angle better, here is the "backup" shot which I had thought would be the best view.

Tim, its really cool to see the behind the scenes time-lapse of how that press went together.   Do you have any new time-lapse projects you are working on?

Thanks Windsor.

I'd like to record every step in the process of the product being made from raw material to a finished good and play it back in around 2 minutes.
