2014 Railroad Photography

1/11/2014. Got a call from another railroad photographer that the NS1067, the Reading Heritage Unit, was in Lincoln. Most of us assumed that it snuck through in the middle of the night. I called up the "Other Brad" and we were off to Lincoln to catch it.

1. West of Pleasant Dale, Nebraska. A westbound Empty Coal Train is waiting for the Loaded Eastbound Coal Train to clear.
Image

2. After the Coal Trains cleared up, here comes the 1067 on the East Side of Pleasant Dale, NE. That BNSF Locomotive was not on the point the night before. They added it in Lincoln.
Image

3. Here is the train crossing the county road East of Pleasant Dale, NE. That Darrel in the photo, he is the one that called and told me it was still in Lincoln.
Image

4. Now back on the West side of Pleasant Dale, NE.
Image

5. Close up of the NS1067 - the Reading Lines Heritage Unit, nicknamed "Bee Line Service".

6. Here is the "Going Away shot" from the same spot.

7. Now we are at Seward, NE
Image

8. Herzog work train in the Background
Image

9. The "Other Brad" using his Shooting Platform errrrrr heavy duty luggage rack. Needless to say, I want one too!
Image

10. The was the end of that chase, next up the train behind it has some Boeing 737's on it!
Image

11. After that, we met up with a BNSF Employee that took us in the yard to see the Rotary Snowplow! This Locomotive was right next to it, its a Freshly Painted SD60M with remote control added to it.
Image

12. Here is the Rotary Plow! I really want to see one of these in action sometime!
Image

13. On the way back to Omaha we caught this train coming off the Sioux City Sub and heading towards Lincoln.

Very nice pictures Brad. I really like the ones with the Boeing's on the car, the plow and of course the shots with the Burlington in them.

Thanks Skinzfan! I don't see the Boeing's very often, but them seem to come through quite often!

I can't wait until March when the Sun will be far enough north to get light on the North Side of the Burlington Station. Hopefully I can combine sunrise and a late Amtrak Train for a photo some morning.

On 2/9/2014 the NS9620, wearing the "Honoring our Veterans" special paint scheme, cam through Nebraska. This locomotive was leading most of the way here but after some mechanical problems, the power was wyed and the NS8373 lead the rest of the way.

Great Day outside and lots of cool trains to Photograph!

1. Upon arriving in Ashland, I found this great power lineup waiting to head west! Can't beat an SD60 Leading three old Geeps!
Image

2. Then Again, How about an SD40-2 Leading yet another Green and Black SD60! Only think better is if this SD40-2 was also Green and Black! This train was the LINLIN (The Lincoln to Omaha to Lincoln train). It transfers cars from Hobson Yard in Lincoln to Gibson Yard in Omaha and then back to Hobson Yard.
Image

3. Here is the LINLIN Crosssing the Platte River! The SD40-2 is one of my favorite locomotives!
Image

4. After that it was off to what I was really looking for today. The NS8100, the Nickleplate Heritage Unit! Here at 112th Street between Lincoln and Pleasent Dale.
Image

5. One of my favorites of the day! NS8100 rounding the curve.
Image

6. Same spot as #5 facing the other direction.
Image

7. Close up of the 8100
Image

8. Since we had a showing at our house today, my wife and our dog came along for the ride. Here is the 8100 waiting in line outside of lincoln.
Image

9. While taking the photos in #7 and #8, we talked to another railroad photographer and he told me the NS8102 the Pennsylvania Heritage Unit was still in Lincoln burried in the yard. It was the other locomotive that I wanted to catch today, but I assumed I had missed it. After a decently long wait, we saw it depart the yard so we raced out to the first photo spot. Second locomotive in this photo.
Image

10. Same spot, facing the other direction.
Image

11. Then we raced out west of Pleasent Dale, thinking we didn't have much time, however I found this train taking its turn first and the NS8102 had to wait its turn.
Image

12. After that train cleared up, here is the NS1080 with the NS8102
Image

13. Same shot looking the other way.
Image

14. The Day ended with a pair of War Bonnets leading a stack train!

1. A light Power Move rolls through the North UP Yard in Council Bluffs (Former Chicago and Northwestern Yard). There is also a passenger special ready to go in the background. This 18 car train will probably depart tomorrow (Monday 4/21/2014).
Image

2. New Concrete Bridge recently installed by the UP. It replaces an old Steel Double Track bridge from the C&NW Days.
Image

3. A Westbound Coal Empty rolls through the Canadian National Yard (Former Illinois Central Yard). This train is a Detour using the CN. The CN Parrallels the UP From Dennison Iowa to Council Bluffs Iowa. Due to track work on the Blair Sub, some westbound trains are using the CN From west of Dennison, IA to Council Bluffs. The eastbound trains are still using the UP (Former C&NW) track. Normally westbounds go through Blair, NE and Eastbounds go through OImaha, NE.
Image

4/19/2014

4. This caboose has been parked on the track recycling yard in council bluffs for as long as I can remember. Recently the track recycling facility has been completely cleaned out of all old track materials. This caboose was also rolled out of its resting place and is seeing the light of day. No I just hope it goes to a good home and not a scrapper...
Image

5. A westbound Manifest in Omaha, NE
Image

6. Another UP Detour on the CN. See photo #3 for more details.
Image

7. Same train as photo #6 crossing over the enterance to Big Lake Park in CB.
Image

8. One of the ugliest locomotives ever made... CN2402 which is a GE C40-8M. BNSF put down pre-emergent this week along their tracks in CB. Pre-emergent is dyed yellow according to government rules.

1. First off, a UP Passenger Special from 8/2/2014
Image

2. Next a CN Train that snuck up on me. When I left CB, this train was stopped on the mainline about 1/2 mile north of town. I headed north for Woodbine, IA and got setup, this train was the first train I saw. It must have hit the gas as soon as I passed it. Detector said it was doing 39mph. Not the shot I was planning on...

Sweet! You got before and after there! When I was a kid spending a lot of time in Hastings, I watched those "Green and Black" locomotives go by all day long on the BN. BNSF has painted a lot of locomotives lately, its good to see some of the old stuff still hanging in there!

The old U.P. depot in Columbus. Scheduled for the wrecking ball soon, unless somebody comes up with the $750,000 it might take to stabilize the deteriorating structure and then move it.

Lots and lots of rumors about whats going on out in Cheyenne. Official word is that they were working on the scale in the boiler and other items, but the locomotive was getting close to its Federally Mandated FRA inspection that they decided to do it all now. Last thing I saw from anyone official is it might be this fall, but more likely 2016 until its fired up again.

Get digging deep enough on the internet, you can find lots of other theories too...
