2014 Fall Foliage Photos

Post by Coyote »

I have been noticing the sumac turning red and was wondering where people are heading this fall to get some local color photos. Anyone seeing color yet? Where will you be heading?

I though lots of rain was a bad thing?

I have no specific plans for fall color yet, but in a month or so when it really gets in to full swing, I am sure I will hit the back roads looking for something to shoot.

I've always thought that the ideal set of conditions were:

Rainy spring and summer
Cool, dry, sunny fall
No early frosts

The height of New England colors is traditionally Columbus Day (2nd Monday in October) which is easy to remember.
According to the Farmer's Almanac: Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota, Kansas... October 5-21.

I could be wrong but I thought ideal conditions were moisture through early fall, then cool, dry weather like you mentioned Coyote. Most years in Eastern Nebraska and Western Iowa have very dry falls which causes the leaves to just fall off. After living in Eastern Iowa for 3 years, I can say that they do receive more moisture and have cooler temps than our part of the state. I am definitely looking forward to this year's color.

We have some locust trees that will start turning any day now. They are the first tree around here that I usually notice. Get the a really bright yellow leaf.

This photo below was taken over by Crescent, IA 10/23 and I know I have more at home from 10/29 with lots of fall color in them still.

Today reminded me. The other place I always seem to first notice trees turning is when I am heading East on Pacific Street between 114th and I80. When I look across the valley there are a lot of trees. You can tell a few in there are starting to turn now.

The locust trees have really started turning and losing foliage fast. I am surprised the amount of color we are seeing already. Granted its only the first round, but seems to be coming in a hurry. Below is a photo from the end of October in 2009. Notice all the color still hanging around then.

October 24th 2009.

We have a few trees in our neighborhood that have completely turned red. It does seem early this year, but so far everything is looking great for getting good foliage.

We got married last Oct 19th and was a fall wedding. For photos we wanted backgrounds of the trees; we struggled to find an area with the colors. We visited the same areas last week and they were further along than last year! I sure hope this is not a sign for extreme cold or snow this year :D

We got married on October 6 2012 and we also had a hard time finding good foilage to take pictures with. The night before the wedding was record cold and most of the leaves had already fallen off.

I'm really not liking the odds of having a good fall color season this year. The early trees have already lost most of their leaves cause of this win today, driving around right now their bare trees everywhere. However almost everything else is Still Green. (I warm the most hill from Council Bluffs the Crescent almost all the trees are still green. If the temperature really does get down to 29 or 30 this evening, we could end up going from green to brown with no color.

One more strange thing I've noticed quite a bit this year is where a tree is completely green on one app and already peaked with color on the other half.

Yeah I am worried about the freeze tonight with the winds....that really takes a toll on the plants. The good thing is that it shouldn't be a hard freeze as the temps are only expected to drop to around 33 or 34. And then next week is looking good (cool and dry) Hopefully we can make it through tonight.

Yes, the NW corner of Preparation Canyon, in the Loess Hills State Forest. Color is still behind...
Iowa's fall color report from the State Forest Nursery. This recording was made Monday, October 6, 2014. wrote:There has not been a significant change from last week. The beans and corn are turning golden brown, and ash trees are beginning to yellow. Walnuts are yellow and lost more leaves after recent high winds. The sumac on the hillsides are turning red and the prairies are showing their late-summer golden hue. The peak is predicted around the week of October 19-25.

I don't think its really behind. Going back through old photos last night, almost all my local fall color photos were taken after the 23rd of October.

1. A few trees starting to get a tint of yellow in there. Little hard to tell because they were in the shade.

2. Same tree I posted a few days ago, lot more red now.

I noticed that too. Downtown, quite a few trees in the mall are turning yellow.

We have one more cold night tonight that could be near freezing, but if we make it through, the whole next week looks great for producing color.

There is some really nice color along Dodge street near Boystown and also across the street at FNB Business Park. Also as in previous years, some of the really best color is along I80 just west of 72nd on the north side of the interstate.

A couple miles north of Honey Creek. Just had about an hour to kill between when I left the Gallery and when I needed to get to the Clink for hockey. It was still really green.

Looks like there is a little color at Preparation Canyon, but not a lot. I saw a little of that yesterday too. Some of the Oaks over by the Little Sioux Boyscout camp were all brown. I wonder if some of the valley's got really cold one night?
