2016 Fall Color Thread

Post by Brad »

A month from this weekend we should start seeing actual fall color (not the stressed trees that are already turning colors). Two months from this weekend we should be near peak.

Below is my "arm chair" weatherman data going back to 2007. This is all completely my opinion. As of right now, I think Its going to be a decent/average year for fall colors. July was just above average, and as of today, August is just above average too (76 and 66). I think a cool start to September could make things a little better, but after last year I think a warm wet September could make color not as good.

Average First Color is September 28
Average Peak is October 26
Average End of Fall Color is November 11

Hope you enjoy, I had fun looking in to this!

Lol, don't worry, I am not wishing summer away. I was just cleaning off my "To-Do List" before I went on vacation. Sent the past 9 days in Washington DC and New York. I wanted as many things done before I left that I could because September is just crazy for me!

Wednesday I flew all over town in a Helicopter and didn't really notice much, but then yesterday from the ground it seemed like there was a noticeable difference.

Still not too much around town, just random color here and there. Last night I rode the Taco Ride to Mineola, IA and didn't really see any color. Today I went to the AIA conference in Lincoln and saw pockets of color here and there between Lincoln and Omaha. It was nothing big, just little stands of trees here and there that started turning.

Could be a short fall color season if it gets too cold!

The Ashe trees are looking Great! That area along the creek in Aksarben is really bright yellow and they when you are on dodge, looking SE towards regency, there is a bunch of color in there too!

So far the most color I am seeing is from the Ash, Locust, and Sumca. Few red maples here and there, but not as wide spread as they Ash and Locust.

My yard is getting to be a blaze of color now. Paper birch are brilliant yellow, Doublefile viburnum and nannyberry viburnum are deep red and the amur maple are bright red. Ornamental grasses are rust colored. All against red of virginia creeper climbing the trees. My red oak and sugar maple have not turned yet, they are usually the last. I work for Travel Iowa and we are predicting peak color for Southwest Iowa to be October 22nd to the 23rd.

Great picture. Did they actually clean all the seaweed out of there yet? I can't see any in this picture.

Thanks! If you are at the edge looking down, about 8"-10" you see tons of seaweed.

Went up the the Loess Hills this afternoon and what a beautiful day it was. Lots of color everywhere. I hiked around this evening, found a few nice spots and was hoping to get a nice sunset photo. However the clouds were fairly thick and no real sunset color that would work with the compositions I had selected. All in all, great day!

FYI, they had a hard freeze the other morning and the leaves were falling fast. If you plan on going up there, I would hurry.

Here are a few photos from today.

So I think the hard freeze hurt the trees in the Loess hills north of Omaha. Last night we went up to Hitchcock and some hillsides over half the trees were bare.

However on the other hand, Omaha looks beautiful right now. There are some hillisdes up by the Mormon bridge that are starting to get some bare spots, but most area looks good. The rest of town looks great, lots of color everyone with only a few trees here and there that are almost bare. One more windy day and we could looks a lot of the ash trees and locust. Some of the reds are really kicking in now as well.

Where did you take this from? I'm amazed by how much you were able to fit in the photo. I live right in that neighborhood and just living on a daily basis feels absolutely nothing like this photo makes it look. It really highlights the hilliness. And seeing the Cathedral at the top really puts into perspective how much lower I am in elevation than that place. When I travel between the areas it feels like nothing.

Standing right on the sidewalk, on the southwest corner of 90th and Dodge (library corner).

Last weekend the colors in Nebraska City were awesome. I suspect peak colors are occurring this week. The Burning Bushes are brilliantly red, and my Norway maple is near peak.
