After tonights sunset petered out, I decided to head down to the tracks and shoot some after dark long exposure shots.

As I was pulling up a coal train was rolling by... It was not quite dark enough yet, but I shot the DPU on he end just to see:
Image

So then the sky was right, but no train:
Image

And I waited:

And waited:

It was dark... I wasted an hour.... so I left!

Tonight I grabbed my bicycle and old camera and rolled downtown.  I can really see a difference between the photos I shot Saturday and the Photos from tonight.   However I did not feel like lugging all that weight around on the bike!

First off when I arrived I missed an EB UPRR coal heading across the river, however I found BNSF 8717 waiting for the UP to pass so it could move on the the UP and over the river via the UP bridge.

#1 EB - BNSF 8717
Image

#2 EB - BNSF 8717
Image

To my surprise, I see WB BNSF 6132 sitting on the BNSF waiting for the EB BNSF 8717, or so I thought...

#3 WB - BNSF 6132
Image

While waiting for EB BNSF 8717 to clear, I hear EB UPRR 6249 rolling in.  Trying to peak between the cars of EB BNSF 8717, I am surprised when I see this, HLCX 6249

#4 HLCX 6249 on EB UPRR 6249
Image

and then another suprise when BNSF 8717 finally clears.... It has a Caboose on the end?!?!

#5 BN Cabosse 12539 on the rear of BNSF 8717
Image

#6 which lead to a cool shot with BN Caboose 12539 and HLCX 6249
Image

Now EB BNSF 8171 is finally clear I can get a good look at EB UPRR 4742

#7 EB - UPRR 4742
Image

#8 EB - UPRR 4742
Image

#9 EB - UPRR 4742, with the Bill Clinton Locomotive 4242 ;)
Image

#10 I hear what I thought was WB BNSF 6132 heading towards me, however it is WB BNSF 9744
Image

#11 more WB - BNSF 9744
Image

#12 SD70MAC 9277 on WB BNSF 9744
Image

#13 ES44AC 6126 on WB BNSF 9744
Image

WB is no more than gone when I hear another WB BNSF and again assumed it was WB BNSF 6132, and again I was wrong and WB BNSF 6020 comes towards me.

#14 WB - BNSF 6020
Image

I never did see WB BNSF 6132 move.

I left for a while and rode my bicycle around downtown and came back for find Omaha's own OMAX rolling in, EB UPRR 6638 rolling in to town full of Coal

History Question:

Did Omaha ever have a RoundHouse in and around 1936, near 42nd street?

Here is a small section of a 1955 aerial photo. It shows 42nd street going north and south over the railroad tracks. The street with the curve east of 42nd is A Street before Interstate 80 took over that land.

Two of my favorite Union Pacific Heritage Locomotives were in town over the weekend.

UP placed these locomotives in a half way decent location for shooting Sunday afternoon...

The UP1995, The Chicago and Northwestern

Tom,
I was not there long when it rolled up, we must have just missed each other.  I know what you look like so I would have said hi.

Mark,
I am not quite sure how often it makes the trip across the river to Omaha.  May be once a day or several times a week?  CN has track in North Downtown/Carter Lake that it serves.  Its "Main line" ends just about south of Broadway in Council Bluffs.  If the Swing Bridge still worked they would use that because that is there track.

I did not have much luck AGAIN  with the 4141!  After the healpful phone calls from Allan, the posts on railroadforums from Todd, and the emails from Brian, I headed out to Fremont.  I got there just before dark and set up where I thought a crew change was going to be made, however they changed crews about a 1/2 mile down the line.  So I froze my arse off for this lame shot:

1.  ISO 3200, F4.0, 1/80, AWB
Image

2.  While waiting, I do like this shot of the Stacker before the 4141

3.  Talk about wind... Notice the waves in the bars as they come down and the blur from the camera shake... The Cold Front came about an hour too early...
