Allan,

I noticed in this shot something I might be able to help you with. The funky greenish "orbs" of light. It's an inverse of the lights on the front of the locomotive. I used to get this too when shooting night skylines, etc. I'm betting you have a UV filter on that lense of your camera. When shooting bright lights like that (especially when dark), take it off and it will go away. That's what was causing mine a few years ago and that was the fix.

And that is what I did now. I won't be using any kind of filter anymore. Thanks.

I wouldn't go that far... You might try a circular polarizer next summer and see what you think!

First off, 12/19/2008 - Amtrak in the Snow

Image

Image

Yesterday, 12/27/2008 - a very disapointingly slow day...

First I went to check out the Iowa Interstate yards, nothing going on and the Locomotive I wanted to see was "Hidden".

Image

Image

Then I wnt over the the North UP yard/CN yard (Avenue G). Saw a UP crew switching cars and the IC locomotive, just parked for the day.

Image

Image

Then over to the Main UP yard, a Northbound fright departing with 2 BNSF locomotives behind the UP.

Image

an Iowa Interstate locomotive doing some switching.

Image

There was also a new "retro" KCS locomotive way back in the yard that I could not get a photo of.

Saturday, as I approached The Durham Museum from the South,  I spotted this locomotive sitting east of the Durham Museum from the 10th street overpass.  I took a photo of this locomotive from the east end of the Durham Museum Parking Deck.

Image

Later, I took a closer look at the photo and I saw the letter.KCS on the front of locomotive.

Image

I Googled KCS and found out that the Kansas City Southern has a website.
http://www.kcsouthern.com

After viewing Kansas City Southern System Map
http://www.kcsouthern.com/SiteCollectio ... em_map.pdf

I learned that KSC has a Haulage and/or Marketing Agreement with BNSF, UP or other railroads to service Lincoln, Omaha and Council Bluffs.

Image

Has anyone seen a KCS - Kansas City Southern locomotive before in the Omaha Area?

Actually you missed the "Unique" part of that locomotive, it was the KCS NAFTA locomotive see photo below.  KCS serves 2 of the elevators over in Council Bluffs and for some reason UP parks there over here, which is cool with me because they easy to photography.

I think the reason why we see Locomotives sitting over there is because the UP is using those tracks for storage of extra Locomotives. Because the economy is so bad. The Railroads are just finding anywhere to store the extra units.

I went down to a local engineering firm yesterday to drop off a print and thought I would stop by the tracks when I left.  I was a bit supprised by what I found - 14 parked locomotives.  Now sometimes UP parks 4 or 5 on the east end of Union Station (which were there).  However there was 9 more just west of them by 13th street.

Here are the 9 (3 General Electric, 6 General Motors)
Image

Here are the 5 in the noraml spot (all GM) 2 KCS, 1 SP patch, 2 UP

Thanks Mark and Allan!

Here are a few more from Sunday after the CU game:

1.  A BNSF red and silver locomotive from right after the BN and SF merger.  Personally I don't see to many of these around here.

2.  A close up of the cab of the BNSF 558

3.  The interesting load right behing the 558

4.  Another shot of the load:

5.  I saw 4 trains and 2 more locomotives in a matter of 5 min.  2 Union Pacific - West, 1 Union Pacific - East, and the BNSF - East waiting to cross the river on the Union Pacific.  Here are 3 of them at once, you can only see the front of the BNSF on the left.
Image

6.  More KCS locomotives parked in Omaha, I think there were 3 pair this weekend, 7th street Omaha, 16th street Omaha and Lake Manaua, CB, IA

I was able to see something new over in Council Bluffs last night, and EJ&E  (Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway).
Wikipedia wrote:The Elgin, Joliet and Eastern Railway (reporting mark EJE) is a Class II railroad that operates in the suburbs surrounding Chicago. The railroad is a link between Class I railroads in northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana. Nicknames for the railroad include "The J" and "The Chicago Outer Belt Line".

On September 26, 2007, the Canadian National Railway announced it plans to purchase a majority of the EJ&E, leaving only a small stretch of track in Indiana which will be reorganized as the Gary Railway. The purchase was approved on December 24 by the U.S. Surface Transportation Board, and the deal was consummated effective February 1, 2009
